LYFORD — The Lady Bulldogs made quick work of the La Villa Lady Cardinals on Tuesday night.
Lyford scored early and often as the home team dispatched the Lady Cardinals 17-0 in three innings to close out their non-district schedule at Lady Bulldog field in Lyford.
After shutting down the visiting side in the first inning, the Lady Bulldogs scored six runs to start the game.
In the bottom of the second with bases loaded, all-around athlete Rebekah Perez hit a deep ball to left field driving in three runs by Bailey Scogins, Barbera Delgado and Jasmine Palafox to give the Lady Bulldogs a comfortable 14-0 lead.
Lyford would score three more runs behind Kyndra Brown, Nicole Liserioto and Adriana Duran to close out the inning up 17-0.
The game signified an end to the non-district games and as head coach Eloy Perez said: “The beginning of the season’s second phase.”
A slew of all-around athletes from volleyball and basketball have made their way onto the Lyford softball team. Familiar faces like Rebekah Perez (first baseman), Miranda Ramirez (catcher), Clarissa Cavazos (pitcher) and Bailey Scogins all pitched in for the win.
“We had about six or seven girls that were in basketball so getting them back takes a while,” said coach Perez.
“Out of those six or seven, four or five are starters and it takes a while to get that chemistry going but it seems that we’re hitting it and luckily for us district starts on Friday.”
This season, Spring Break helped move the district schedule back one week to give the team a little more time to gel together, and with the team’s first district game against Mont Alto this Friday it could not have come at a better time.
Perez, who is naturally a staring first baseman, was given the opportunity to get some games in as a pitcher.
“Our starting pitcher is Clarissa Cavazos and she will go the first three games in district and then from there we will adjust to throw Rebekah some,” said Perez. “Once we know who we’re playing we will work to give Clarissa and Rebekah some rest.
Lyford starts off the district season this Friday at home against Monte Alto at 6 p.m.
