SANTA ROSA — Barbara Delgado’s three RBIs helped the Lyford Lady Bulldogs (13-7, 6-0) get out of the Santa Rosa (6-8, 2-4) with an unblemished district record.

The four-year varsity shortstop went 3 for 5 at the plate and the Lady Bulldogs carved out a 10-0 victory at the Lady Warriors field Tuesday night.

“We’re doing things well right now and we’re trying to maintain the way we have been playing,” said head coach Eloy Perez. “I was a little worried about them (Santa Rosa) because they played Falfurrias pretty good. But we jumped on them a little early and then again towards the middle and the end and we tried to utilize as many players as we could.

“The girls know their role and they don’t have a problem with that. They’re pretty team-oriented and we’re hitting things where they want to be.”

Lyford’s Miranda Martinez put the Lady Bulldogs on the board first. In the second inning, the second baseman scored after teammate Jasmin Palafox’s bunt-sacrifice led to a 3-1 throwing error allowing Martinez to score from second.

In the top of the third, Lyford tripled the score to 3-0 behind two RBIs from Cici Cuellar, and Miranda Martinez drove home Miranda Rodriguez and Rebekah Perez.

Delgado’s two RBIs in the fourth and sixth innings helped Lyford push the lead to 6-0. The senior ripped a ball to deep center field, hitting the outfield wall bringing home pinch runner Kyndra Brown from second base.

“That’s why we lead off with her (Delgado),” said Perez. “She’s a talented athlete with an eye for the ball and sometimes she can be a little too aggressive. She likes to swing the ball and she’s got power.

“It’s nice to see her going because then Miranda, Rebekah, Cici and the rest of the girls all have RBI opportunities.”

Lyford’s offense continued to find opportunities late in the game. In the top of the seventh, ace pitcher Clarissa Cavazos got in on the action when she got behind a ball and sent it flying toward center field for a two-base RBI bringing in Palafox.

The Lady Bulldogs will face district opponent Monte Alto on Saturday. Meanwhile Santa Rosa faces Falfurrias.
