Lady Bulldogs open area round series with Game 1 win

The victory stretched the Lady Bulldogs winning streak to 15 games.

Lyford looks to sweep the series today with Game 2 set for 2 p.m. at Texas A&M-Kingsville.

“We played good tonight, and we did things right,” said Lyford head coach Eloy Perez. “We had one running error and one mental mistake that one of our freshman made, but she’s learning. We had one error on defense but other than that we did just about everything we wanted to do.”

Lyford star catcher Miranda Ramirez had another great offensive outing going 2 of 4 at the plate and scoring one run. On defense the senior showed her arm strength as she picked off three runners (two at first and one at second) on the night.

“Miranda’s our leader and she leads us both offensively and defensively,” said coach Perez. “It’s just her presence and the fact that she knows the game so well that she understands what needs to be done.

“She leads by example because she’s not the vocal type but her actions speak louder than her words. Every now and then she might get down on her self because she’s a competitor, but that’s when her teammates and vocal leaders come around to pick her up.”

Ramirez and teammate Rebekah Perez gave the Lady Bulldogs a 2-0 lead at the end the first. In the bottom of the third Miranda Martinez stretched the lead to three after a wild pitch from Odem’s ace pitcher Mia Auster.

In the fifth Martinez scored her second run of the night after a 5-3 throwing error to give Lyford a comfortable 4-0 lead.

Odem’s Juliana Alcaoa scored a consolation run in the top of the seven but by then Lyford was too far ahead.
