LYFORD — Coach Teresa Gutierrez and her girls flexed their offensive muscles Tuesday night as the Lady Bulldogs convincingly took care of business at home 51-27 against the Falfurrias Belles.

“Today we kind of slowed it down a lot,” said Gutierrez. “We through in some new plays and were working on them against somebody else and it showed in the score tonight.

“We needed to work on execution and to work on plays that we just put in for district and we used today to do that.”

After jumping out to a 9-0 lead in the first quarter Coach Gutierrez went to her bench and immediately began giving some of the experienced teammates some much needed minutes.

“I moved up some kids from JV and we wanted them to spend time with their new group,” said Gutierrez.

Heading into the half the Lady Bulldogs outscored the Belles 10-6 in the first and 15-4 in the second and found themselves up 25-10.

The defense stood its ground and only allowed four points in the second period.

“We went to the press,” said Gutierrez. “The kids will normally tell me when they’re ready to press and it’s what helps us get going on offense.”

Falfurrias’s Lauryn Barrera cut the lead 29-16 after she hit a three to start the third quarter as she scored six of her eight points in the third quarter giving the team a much needed offensive boost.

However, The Lady Bulldogs responded in the final period, outscoring the Belles 20-11.

Lyford’s Rebeckah Perez had a big fourth quarter scoring eight of her game high 17 points, 13 rebounds in the period.

Teammate Miranda Ramirez scored seven of her 15 points and 11 rebounds in the fourth as well while Erin Martinez contributed with 10.

Falfurrias’s Britney Villegas contributed eight points and Kyla Patton added four.

The Lady Bulldogs face Edinburg Idea Quest College Prep at home Friday.
