LA FERIA — After Friday night’s Battle of 506 football win, the eyes of La Feria were on the Lionettes, who played host to district rival Port Isabel.

The Lionettes shook off a slow start to their first set and then coasted to a 25-17,25-9,25-15 win Saturday, improving their district record to 2-0.

“We ended our non-district play last week against Lopez. We didn’t win, but it was a good match,” La Feria coach Rebea Fraga said. “Today we started a little sluggish; we’re a small school so our kids are involved with different things, especially after a Friday night. It’s a challenge to be ready the next day, but the kids came out and got things done.”

During the first set, Port Isabel grabbed an early lead until La Feria battled back for a 13-12 lead and the game win.

After taking their first lead during the first game, La Feria held the lead for the next two.

Karina Diaz finished with two kills and 11 assists, and Sierra Salinas wound up with eight kills, three digs and one ace.

Teammate Natalie Gonzalez finished with three kills and two digs.

“I was at the game last night with the band and that was great to get that win, and now today we took care of business and got the win,” Gonzalez said. “We have been playing some good ball lately, we are coming off back-to-back sweeps now and we’re asserting our dominance. We want to win a district title, that is our goal.”

During the second and third sets, La Feria put on a clinic. The Lionettes opened the second set with a 13-2 run, and the third set was a mirror image of the second set.

“We regrouped after that slow start,” Diaz said. “We were able to find some things we liked and executed them. We worked well today. Going forward we need to start off strong and not start so slow. We have seen a lot of progress, we’re still moving girls around, but we’re getting better. I like where we are at.”

While the season is young, La Feria is starting to find its form. Last week, La Feria swept Progesso and made quick work of the Lady Tarpons.

Now, La Feria will prepare for a road test Tuesday at Hidalgo.

“We’re going to start preparing for Hidalgo, they have bigger hitters, so that is something we will get ready for and adjust to, but we’re ready,” Gonzalez said.
