La Feria-Kingsville highlights Week 9 as Star’s Game of the Week

With their 48-7 victory over Hidalgo this past Friday, the Lions (6-1, 2-0) enter Week Nine atop the league standings with just two games left to play.

Last Friday’s win marked the Lions’ fourth straight victory. Their only loss of the season so far was a Week Three loss to Mercedes.

Prior to the Mercedes loss, the Lions beat Donna North in their season opener then crushed Santa Rosa 51-0 in Week Two.

After their loss to Mercedes, the Lions pulled off wins over Sharyland Pioneer, Progreso, Grulla and, most recently, Hidalgo.

This Friday, the Lions look to push their winning streak to five in a row and possibly seal up a playoff spot with a win over Kingsville King in the Valley Morning Star’s Game of the Week for Week Nine.

King enters Friday’s contest at 3-4 overall but is also undefeated in league play at 1-0. King actually helped the Lions this past weekend by upsetting Zapata, which was also looking to improve to 2-0 in district.

The Lions conclude the regular season at Zapata on Oct. 31.

The Lions have qualified for the postseason for the past two years, but have not had much luck.

In 2013, the Lions were the top seed in District 32-3A Division I, but fell to Grulla in the first round 48-24.

And in 2012, the Lions also fell in the opening round to Raymondville, 52-36.
