La Feria boys take gold at District 32-4A meet

With track season in full effect, the race to the UIL state meet in Austin is well underway.

At the District 32-4A meet last week, the La Feria boys team won the team title with 202 points. Raymondville was second with 83 points and Port Isabel finished in third with 80 points.

Reyes Rodriguez was first in the 1600 meter with a time of 4:30.18 and first in the 800 meter (2:00.88). In the field events Zahary Cordova was first in the discus, Marcus Torres was first in the high jump, Francisco Cavazos took first in the pole vault, and Julian Trevino won the long jump and took third in the triple jump.

On the girls side, the Lionettes finished in second place with 126 points, just behind Grulla, which took first with 132 points. Port Isabel took third with 103 points.

In District 32-2A, the Lasara girls team captured the league title with 163.50 points. Santa Maria came in a close second with 146 points and San Perlita was third with 86.

For Lasara, Alicia Hernandez was first in the discus throw, Abriana Vasquez was second in the 3200, Daniela Rivera was first in the 300-meter hurdles, and Cynthia Gonzales and Daniela Contreras finished one and two in the 100 hurdles. Some notable finishers for Santa Maria were Lorena Ayala, Kristen Aleman, Yazmin Cantu and Daisy Fuentes.

On the boys side, San Perlita took the team title with 188 points with La Villa coming in second with 138 points and Santa Maria took third with 102.50. Some notable names that stood out for the Trojans were Adam Barrientez, Tige Johnson and Victor Galvan.

Johnson took first in the high jump with a leap of 5-02.00 and the long jump with a jump of 18-03.00.

“The team competed extremely hard,” said coach Nathanial Garza. “San Perlita hasn’t won a team district title in a very long time and these young men were able to bring the title home. They did it with hard work and believing in each other.

“These young men worked so hard every day and have a lot of heart. I’m extremely proud of them and couldn’t ask for a better group.”

Finally, in District 32-3A, the Lyford girls won the league title while Santa Rosa was second and Edinburg IDEA quest was third. For the Lady Bulldogs, Summer Castillo and Ashley Rangel impressed by finishing in first in the shot put and discus. Samantha Delgado was third in the 100 while Katarina Payan was second in the 100 and the 300 hurdles.

“The team did an astounding job,” said Lyford coach Marissa Chapa. “Being that we are so few, each girl competed in multi-events. We battled through injuries all season, but we pulled it together for the title.”
