Day 2 of the District 32-4A district track & field meet ended with La Feria defending its boys title and Grulla winning the girls title.

Grulla beat Port Isabel in a close meet, 144-142.

Defending 32-4A champs La Feria came in third place with 137.5 points.

Tina Sierra of La Feria won the 1600 and 3200, and Port Isabel’s Ava Gomez won the long jump, 300 hurdles and anchored the team’s district championship-winning 4 x 400 relay.

La Feria won the boys meet with a score of 233 points. Raymondville finished in second with 86 pints and Port Isabel finished third with 79.50.

Port Isabel led Raymondville and Hidalgo for second by 1.5 points heading into the 4 x 400 relay and finished fourth while Raymondville finished in second to take the meet’s runner-up spot.

“Compared to last year, we had more participants,” Port Isabel coach Joe Gonzales said. “We only had two seniors. We have a lot of kids advancing to area. I’m real happy with the outcome. I couldn’t be proud of this group of kids and the coaches who helped me. Without them, we couldn’t have accomplished this.”

Carlos Rodriguez of La Feria was the only male athlete to win two gold medals in individual events Thursday, finishing first in the 400 and 800.

Rodriguez also anchored La Feria’s 4 x 400 relay team. The Lions swept the boys relays.
