Corpus Christi King’s dominating performance at Saturday’s TISCA Zone/Brownsville ISD Pre-Regional Showcase at Brownsville’s Margaret M. Clark Aquatic Center came with something of an asterisk.
Unlike one year ago when King’s boys and girls won the pre-regional meet and went on to capture team titles nearly two months later at the Region VIII meet, it was another strong showing by the Mustangs on Saturday, but with the knowledge that this time King won’t be back in early February to defend its regional titles.
Due to a realignment of teams, instead of returning to Brownsville for the Region VIII meet, King will be competing at the Region VII meet in early February in San Antonio.
“Our boys and girls swam really well today,” King coach Chris Moralez said. “I just wanted our athletes to come down here, suit up and try their best, so I’m really proud of where they are right now. We like coming down here to compete, but of course, we’re in a new region now with San Antonio teams. This was a good end to 2014 (and our affiliation with Rio Grande Valley and Laredo teams for regional competition).
“It’s the pool, it’s our depth and it’s the competition (that have helped us do well here),” Moralez added. “It’s going to be very tough (at the regional) over in San Antonio, but knowing it would be this way before the season began has helped us prepare for it.
“It’s been good to come down here and compete with the Valley. I’m friends with a lot of the coaches, and there are a lot of swimmers here I like to talk to and see compete. We’ve really enjoyed it.”
King’s boys won Saturday with 298 points compared to 229 for runner-up McAllen Memorial and 223 for third-place Los Fresnos. For the girls, King was first with 329 points, Laredo Alexander was second with 273 and McAllen Rowe was third with 205.
Double-winners of individual events for the King boys were Henry Aguirre (50 freestyle and 100 butterfly) and Dale Lowder (100 and 200 freestyles). They also swam on the Mustangs’ winning 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays.
The King girls were led by the individual first-place finishes of Cecelia Croman (100 backstroke, 100 and 200 freestyles), Kelly Ward (1-meter diving) and Elle Boyd (50 freestyle). Croman and Boyd also swam on winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays for King.
McAllen Memorial’s boys were led in their runner-up finish to King by double-winner Joshua Velasquez (100 backstroke and 200 individual medley). Velasquez also swam on McAllen Memorial’s winning 400 freestyle relay. Christopher Rock added second- and third-place individual finishes while swimming on relays.
“I thought our boys did great,” McAllen Memorial coach Roxanne Balducci said. “I only brought seven boys, and six of them made finals. Same thing with our girls. I only brought seven and all of them made the finals. It was awesome. Yes, (this was a good indicator of regional competition) for some of them. For the ones who weren’t here, hopefully they’ll be stronger and do much better (at the regional).”
The McAllen Memorial girls were led by individual winner Hannah Bradford (100 breaststroke).
Brownsville swimmers and divers enjoyed some strong performances, too, along with swimmers from Los Fresnos.
Hanna’s Maya Athena Imperial was a double-winner in the 200 IM and 500 freestyle. Brownsville Veterans Memorial’s Jonathan Ashford won the 100 breaststroke and took second in the 100 freestyle. Hanna’s Raul Garcia won the boys 1-meter diving.
Los Fresnos’ Andrea Moreno was second in the 200 freestyle and third in the 100 butterfly, and she was on second- and third-place relays along with Ivana Besteiro, who took second in the 50 freestyle. Also, Los Fresnos’ boys took second in the 200 freestyle relay.
For Rivera, Stephanie Castillo was third in the 200 freestyle and fourth in the 100 freestyle, and Adrian Flores was third in the 200 IM. For Pace, Jose de Jesus Hernandez took fourth in the 100 backstroke.
