Kats QB Gutierrez talks about his time as team’s leader

FREDDY GONZALEZ | Valley Morning Star

In 2015, the Raymondville Bearkats’ fan base was introduced to quarterback Daniel Gutierrez.

Tossed into the spotlight following an unfortunate injury to starting QB Jacob Perez during a scrimmage, Gutierrez came in and gave the Bearkats a glimmer of hope and, more importantly, optimism.

That same optimism quickly turned into expectations after Gutierrez earned the district’s newcomer of the year award after passing for more than 1,000 yards while rushing for 365 yards on 88 carries.

That was then and now in his senior season with more than 2,951 yards passing, 2,050 yards rushing and a combined 46 touchdowns to his name, Gutierrez reflects back on his time as the Bearkats’ quarterback and how his senior season has been one of the best years of his high school carrier.

Q: What are you going to remember most about your time at Raymondville?

DANIEL: The most memorable moment in my eyes would be sitting in our locker room getting ready for every home game.

Q: I understand there’s a reason for you wearing the No. 7?

DANIEL: It’s run in the family forever, so I thought I’d keep the tradition going.

Q: You’ve been the starting quarterback at Raymondville for the past three years. What have you learned about playing one of the most difficult positions in football?

DANIEL: You’ve just got to have the confidence going into each game and be the one that your teammates can rely on to be there.

Q: What’s the best advice you’ve been given throughout your career?

DANIEL: The best advice that I’ve gotten is probably that tough times don’t last, but tough people do.

Q: Five years from now when people hear the name Daniel Gutierrez, what do you what people to think and what do you what them to know?

DANIEL: I want them to know me as some one who loved the game and put everything he had into everything he did.

Q: This year has been one of the best seasons in Bearkat football history. What do you attribute that to?

DANIEL: I think it’s because I’ve just tried to be the best leader that I could be and help the team to the best of my ability.

Q: What game are you going to remember most?

DANIEL: People may say why this game, but I would choose the Rio Hondo game (that we lost) because when the lights on Friday night get bright and the stage is bigger, it’s how we perform that counts.
