Harlingen High’s Jose Garcia won the state title in the Class 6A 100-meter dash Saturday at Mike A. Myers Stadium at the University of Texas in Austin.

Garcia’s wind-aided time of 10.00 seconds set a state and national record in the event.

Garcia, a senior, advanced to the state meet by winning the region IV-6A meet at Heroes Stadium in San Antonio with a time of 10.17 as the Cardinals won the team regional championship.

The Cardinals’ star sprinter finished ninth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.75 seconds in his previous appearance at the state championships as a sophomore in 2019.
