Harlingen’s Garcia speeds to top time in 100; Weslaco’s Hough wins regional title

8:20 p.m. update: The Region IV Class 5A and 6A track meets are coming out of a lightning delay and is now expected to continue at approximately 8:30 p.m.

SAN ANTONIO — Harlingen High’s Joe Garcia was the fastest qualifier of the day at the Region IV meet Friday at Heroes Stadium in Antonio.

Garcia, who had the top time in the region going into the meet, sped to the finish line in 10.61 seconds to beat out Austin Westlake’s Ashton Torns to the finish line the top two finishers of the event on Saturday will advance to the state tournament.

Garcia holds the meet record already with a blistering 10.43 time during the 2019 meet.

Weslaco High sophomore Jayda Hough set a personal best for the second straight meet, clearing 5 feet, 6 inches and capturing the Region IV-6A high jump championship.

Hough cleared 5-4 to win the area meet and says she’s hoping to set another PR of at least 5-8 at the state meet.

”It’s just surreal right now,” Hough said after stapping off the champions’ podium. “I’m so blessed to have such amazing coaches. I started the season only clearing 4-6 but I believed in myself and redeemed myself.”

”I’m just so thankful right now.”

The meet was delayed twice during the day due to lightning strikes in the area. The first delay lasted approximately 80 minutes and the second lasted a little more than an hour. Some events such as the Class 5A pole vault and several running events, were pending during the delay.

Harlingen High’s Garcia became the Valley’s first regional champ earlier in the day, taking first place in the Class 6A lomg jump with a leap of 23 feet, 6.5 inches. Teammate Eric Quilantan captured third with a jump of 22-11.0

PSJA Memorial’s Wiliams Macias qualified for the Class 5A state meet in the 3,200-meter run. Macias clocked in at 9 minutes, 16.94 seconds, only behind Boerne Champion’s Foster Wilfong at 9:09.68. The two standout long-dis trance runners have battled back and forth for the past two years both in track and cross country and will do so once again at the state meet.

Only some events were finals – including the 3,200 and all field events. The rest were qualifying events for Saturday’s finals, which are set to begin at noon with the 4×100 relay in both classes for both boys and girls the event is scheduled to conclude with the 4×400 at approximately 3:55 followed by awards to team champions.

Below are final results and qualifying results for tomorrow’s finals in the running events. Final events for both 5A and 6A are scheduled to be completed Friday but may be pushed to Saturday morning based on weather conditions.

The top-two finishers from each finals event qualify for the state meet.
