CONVERSE — Harlingen boys track and field coach Efrain Ambriz wanted to see where his top athletes stood when it came to potential region competitors.

After being hauled to the Jim Faught Relays at Converse – Judson High School Saturday, the Cardinals did not disappoint as the quintet brought home five gold medals.

Leading the way was sprinter Christopher Rosales who struck gold in the 100- (10.83), 200- (22.10), and 400-meter (49.03) dashes, while Travis Barnes won the shot put (55-06) and discus throw (154.7).

“We wanted the athletes to gauge themselves against potential regional competition and by the way they competed Saturday, it looks very promising,” Ambriz said. “For Chris to compete like that against this kind of competition was amazing and I’m proud of him.

“Meanwhile, Travis is posting personal bests as he goes along and is peaking at the right time. He’s put in so much work and for him to be rewarded with gold medals against this type of competition, really shows what kind of worker he is.”

Also competing for Harlingen was Devin Rosas, Chris Montemayor and Michael Allen Gonzalez.

Rosas placed fifth in the high jump, Montemayor came in fourth in the 400-meter
