HARLINGEN — The Harlingen South softball team is off to a hot start in district play and senior Kaitlynn De La Fuente has been a key factor in the Lady Hawks’ success.

De La Fuente has shined both in the circle and at the plate. On Tuesday against Hanna, the hurler struck out seven in a complete-game ef-fort. And against San Benito on Thursday, she spun another gem.

In a five-inning game, De La Fuente yielded just two hits, struck out four and tossed the shutout.

With the solid performances, De La Fuente was named the Valley Morning Stars female Player of the Week.

“I’m very proud of myself to win this award and represent my team,” said De La Fuente. “We have all been working hard so it’s great to win and win for my team. Right now, I’m seeing the ball well and all my work is paying off.”

At the plate this week, De La Fuente went 2 for 5 with a home run and five runs scored.

“Kaitlynn pitched her heart out tonight, she has been doing some great things for us,” said South coach Elias Martinez after Thursday night’s win over San Benito. “Tonight, her defense stepped up and helped her, but I’m proud of her and what she is doing for us.”
