Harlingen South girls ready for tough test against Harlingen

HARLINGEN – Cross-town rivals Harlingen and Harlingen South are at it again.

The Lady Cardinals and the Lady Hawks will face off tonight in their first of two meetings this season at the Harlingen South gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.

With a record of 15-13 overall and 4-2 in district action, Harlingen South sits in third place in District 32-6A. Two games behind leader Harlingen, and one behind second place Brownsville Veterans (20-5, 5-1).

After the Lady Hawks’ game against San Benito, Tuesday evening, Harlingen South head coach Kelly Garrett emphasized her team must finish plays to stay in Friday’s game.

“It’s always a big game that they’re (players) always pumped up for. We have to be ready and I know we are ready,” she said. “We just got to go out and do our thing, and we have to finish plays. I just told them that right now.

“If we don’t finish plays on Friday, it’s going to be a long night. We need to make sure that we’re ready and we need to make sure that we play our game. If we do all the little intangibles, then we’ll be fine.”

At the moment, Harlingen South is averaging 42.1 points per game (PPG) and it will need big games from guards Breanna Gonzales and Mikaela Flores to keep up with Harlingen. The senior duo has shot for a combined total of 519 points (Gonzales 283 points, Flores 236) in 27 games this season.

Most notably, Gonzales has had 14 double-digit games, scoring a minimum of 10 points. Flores has racked up 11 of her own, with a game-high of 27 points.

To find Harlingen South’s last district win over Harlingen, you have to go back to the 2012-2013 season, where the Lady Hawks swept the Lady Cards that year, winning 53-47 and 49-43.

At 24-1 overall and 6-0 in district, Harlingen is considered, by many, to be the best team in the Rio Grande Valley.

With its star-studded senior cast, the Lady Cards look the part of a complete team, with Sami Quilantan leading the quartet of seniors with 248 points, 68 assists and 110 steals. Followed by Marissa Gasca with 234 points, 67 assists and 74 steals. Addison Dickey 206 points and 51 assists, while Elvira Fraga has 184 points and 34 assists.

This season, Harlingen is averaging 52.6 points, 26.4 rebounds and 17.3 steals per game. And opponents have taken notice.

Recently, the Lady Cardinals have been playing with a bullseye on their backs. With two of their last three games being decided by fewer than seven points. Needing late rallies to pull out victories.

“Every time we go out and compete, I feel everybody plays their best against us,” said Harlingen head coach Ashley Moncivaiz. “One of the things I tell the girls is that no matter if we play Los Fresnos, Brownsville Hanna or Brownsville Veterans, I want for them to bring their A game. We should always go out there and compete at the highest level we can.”

When we play South they always bring their A game, so we have to be ready to bring ours, too, because they are going to want to go out there and beat us.”
