Harlingen High’s Ricardo, Tienda tabbed Star’s top performers of week

On the volleyball court, the Lady Cardinals dominated intracity rival Harlingen South and on the football field, Big Red easily dispatched Brownsville Hanna.

Leading the charge for the Lady Cards on Saturday was Anabel Ricardo while running back Leo Tienda was key for the football team on Friday.

For their valiant efforts, Ricardo and Tienda were named the Valley Morning Star’s Athletes of the Week.

Ricardo posted four blocks, three aces and five kills as the Lady Cardinals swept the Lady Hawks 25-13, 25-10 and 25-15.

The win kept the Lady Cards’ hopes for a postseason berth alive as well as boosted the team’s spirits after a couple of tough matches prior to Saturday’s.

“We have not been ourselves the last couple of weeks, but we’ve been working hard,” said Lady Card coach Jennifer Martinez after Saturday’s win.

“We knew that if we could get this one (against South), that it would help us the rest of the way through district and maybe (help us) squeeze into the last playoff spot.”

The Lady Cardinals open the second half of the District 32-6A season today hosting Brownsville Rivera then travel to Brownsville on Saturday to take on Hanna.

Meanwhile, Tienda was crucial in the Cards’ 37-21 victory over Hanna on Friday night as he rushed for 129 yards on 22 carries for three touchdowns.

Tienda opened the game with a 5-yard run then scored again in the first quarter on a 6-yard run to put the Cards up 14-0 early. Tienda’s third and final TD came on a 1-yard burst with 6:18 left in the third quarter.

The win improved the Cardinals to 2-0 in District 32-6A and 3-2 overall.

The Cardinals travel to San Benito this Friday for the annual Battle of the Arroyo against San Benito.
