Grulla is in the playoffs for the fourth straight year after beating Kingsville King 33-18 in Kingsville on Saturday night.

The Gators are off to a 2-0 start in District 16-4A, Division I, for the first time in program history, and they also beat King for the first time ever.

“Kingsville is one of those schools we’ve never beat, so it was a great win,” Grulla coach Abel Gonzalez III said. “The kids responded well. That’s a tough football team and our guys battled and we got out with a ‘W.’”

The Gators (4-4) jumped out to a 20-0 lead and led 20-3 at halftime. King (4-5, 1-2) rallied late to make it an eight-point game before Grulla produced a seven-minute drive that ended with a Fabian Anzaldua 4-yard run with 1:30 left that put the game away.

Anzaldua rushed for two touchdowns and threw two touchdown passes to Miguel Flores. Flores also ran for a TD.

“We have some kids that make defenses pay when they get the ball in their hands,” Gonzalez said. “Our offensive line has played really well the last couple of weeks and we’ve relied on them. They’re doing a great job, and as long as we continue to improve and get better, we’re going to be fine.”

LAREDO NIXON 41, SHARYLAND HIGH 21: At Laredo, the Mustangs shut out the Rattlers in the second half to put themselves in a first-place tie in District 31-5A with Sharyland Pioneer.

Nixon and Pioneer is each 5-1 in district. Nixon beat Pioneer earlier this season in Mission. Sharyland High fell to 4-2.

Esteban Guerra scored four touchdowns for Nixon, which bounced back from its first loss of the regular season against Rio Grande City. Alan Alvarez threw three touchdown passes to pace the Rattlers, who led 21-20 at halftime.
