SAN BENITO — The San Benito Greyhounds’ soccer team will wrap up its season against the Weslaco High Panthers tonight.
“I hope we come out with a win,” Greyhounds coach William Huerta said.
Huerta said Weslaco High has hit a good run of form as the season has progressed and that it will not be easy for a Greyhounds team that came out with a win during its last outing against the Panthers. San Benito plays host to Weslaco High at 5:30 p.m.
“Finishing the season with a win would be a really positive finish, especially playing some young guys,” Huerta said.
Despite coming up short of their goal of making the playoffs, the Greyhounds had a solid season, finishing fifth place in a tough District 32-6A.
San Benito picked up a few good wins on the season. A win early in district against Brownsville Hanna showed its capabilities, and the Greyhounds took the Battle of the Arroyo against Harlingen High.
The Greyhounds also played Los Fresnos and Donna North extremely tough, losing by a single mistake here and there, Huerta said.
“I wish it could have gone better,” he said. “Not much we can do now. The season is over and done with, and now we got to focus on the future. I cannot be too disappointed, some good stuff came out of it and some young guys got some playing time that will help us in the future.”
One of those players for the future is junior Ronaldo Abrego. The versatile player hopes to finish off the season strong as well.
“I hope we all play well as a team, limit the mistakes like past games, and just have a good overall mentality with no injuries,” Abrego said. “This game will help us going forward and build a foundation for the younger players.”
Sophomore keeper Pedro Padron also has an eye on the future.
“We expected a better season, but it happens,” he said. “This game will prepare us for our upcoming seasons. We have very good young players on this team, and we hope that we can win against Weslaco.”
