East Valley wrestlers from Los Fresnos and San Benito finished Day 1 of the Region IV-6A wrestling meet Friday in San Antonio.

Both schools have athletes advancing to the second day of the meet.

The San Benito Greyhounds’ boys wrestling team has three of its athletes advancing to Day 2.

“I feel it could have gone a lot better, but when you get to regionals it is a whole other ball game,” San Benito coach Balde Olivarez III said. “Overall, we performed very well. Our young athletes gained some experience and (are) ready for next year already.”

Ismael Lerma (106), Cody Garza (152) and Cristian Faz (195) are the athletes moving on to the second day.

“My guys that advanced, (they) wrestled against some tough schools from the Austin and San Antonio area, but we broke through to the second day,” Olivarez said. “Now our mindset is on winning (today) and advancing.”

From Los Fresnos, Thiago Almeida (106) and Katie Reyes (185) will be competing in Day 2, with the chance of earning a state spot still in the balance.
