In a game on Friday that left everybody wanting more, the Harlingen South Lady Hawks and Los Fresnos Lady Falcons played to a thrilling 48-48 stalemate and needed overtime to determine the winner.
Karla Reyes once again led the Lady Hawks with 19 points, Cameron Del Angel had 10 points and teammate Laura Ramirez added 11 points with three 3-pointers as South took home a 54-48 OT victory.
With the win the Lady Hawks moved to 1-1 on the District 32-6A season. Meanwhile, the Lady Falcons dropped to 0-2 after a 54-48 loss to San Benito on Tuesday.
“I think we did a good job of handling the pressure in overtime and attacking the basket in order to get to the line,” said Harlingen South head coach Kelly Garrett. “Our defense stepped up in overtime and we played smarter overall.”
Next up, the Lady Hawks host Brownsville Hanna at home at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
SANTA MARIA: The Santa Maria Lady Cougars played the Monte Alto Lady Blue Devils to a 39-26 victory this week. After having their Tues-day game cancelled, Santa Maria’s Lorena Ayala led the team with 10 points while teammates Byanca Cantu added nine points, Yazmin Cantu had seven points and Alyzza Garcia contributed six points.
“We are working to get better each week,” said Santa Maria head coach Andrew Sierra. “The district season is getting closer and I want to make sure our team is ready by district play.
“Our defense was good against Monte Alto and we held them to eight points in the first half. We take pride in playing great defense; it was a team effort all the way around.”
The schedule doesn’t get much easier for the Lady Cougars as they host McAllen IDEA before heading to La Feria to take on a tough Lio-nettes team on Thursday at 6 p.m.
