Girls Basketball Notes: Lady Falcons seek complete game

By ANDREW CRUM, Staff Writer

The Los Fresnos Lady Falcons haven’t played a complete game this season.

At least that’s what coach Kim Edquist thinks after trying to figure out what changes need to be made after a district loss to Brownsville Veterans Memorial on Tuesday.

“We haven’t put together a whole game all season, we’ve always missed out on one quarter,” she said. “A lot of time it’s the first half, when we come out in the first quarter, I don’t know if its the jitters or what.”

During the Lady Falcons’ last game, they were outscored 17-5 in the first quarter and struggled to get the offense going. Once again, a slow start left Los Fresnos (10-13, 3-3) with a deficit that they didn’t overcome in a 14-point loss.

“We’ve dug the hole, which I’ve told them is hard to get out of,” Edquist said. “You can make a comeback, but you’re so deep that it makes it very difficult.”

The Lady Falcons are in the mix for a postseason berth, but Edquist knows that if her team can’t put together a better overall performance that could be fading, too.

“It’s extremely frustrating,” she said. “Every day in practice we go over this stuff. They acknowledge it, they just don’t execute it.”

At times during the season, Edquist has said the team has lacked intensity.

“You can’t teach that. They have to want it from inside, and if they don’t want it, that’s the way it looks,” she said. “That’s the way we look out there, like we don’t want it. We’re here to play, not play to win and I want a team that wants to play to win.”

WIN STREAKS

A pair of Metro-area teams are enjoying recent winning streaks.

Pace (11-15, 3-3) has won three straight District 32-5A games after its victory over Edcouch Elsa on Tuesday. The Lady Vikings started district play 0-3.

Port Isabel (13-9, 4-2) has now won four straight games after taking care of Progreso on Tuesday. The Lady Tarpons started District 32-4A with an 0-2 record, but have reeled off four consecutive wins over district opponents.

HOME COURT ADVANTAGE

The Lady Bloodhounds (10-7, 0-0) will be home to face their three district opponents during the next few weeks, battling St. Anthony’s, San Antonio Antonian and Incarnate Word (San Antonio).

Once February begins, St. Joseph will travel to San Antonio to face the same three opponents in consecutive order over the course of three weeks.
