Shaine Casas touched down at McAllen-Miller International Airport on Monday afternoon to a warm welcome after winning a gold medal and breaking Michael Phelps’ record in the 100-meter backstroke at the Phillips 66 National Championship, at the Avery Aquatic Center in Stanford, California — making his time the fifth fastest in the world with a time of 52.72 seconds.

Casas, a 2017 McAllen High graduate, is a sophomore at Texas A&M and on the swim team. Casas won four medals at the event. Not only did he win the gold in the 100-meter backstroke but he also won silver medals in the 200m backstroke (where he stood next to another Olympic star, Ryan Lochte) and the 200m intermediate medley. His relay team also claimed a bronze in the 4×200 free relay.
He is now in the position to potentially earn a spot on the U.S. National Team in the 100-meter and 200-meter backstrokes.
