Football notes: Sub-5A teams return to action after a week off

Sub-5A football was back after a much-needed bye week. Raymondville, Rio Hondo, Lyford and La Villa all began their respective district seasons with a win while La Feria, Santa Rosa and Port Isabel ended up in the loss column.

DISTRICT 16-4A DI: The La Feria Lions (3-3, 0-1) began their district schedule with a humbling 35-7 loss to the Zapata Eagles (4-2, 1-0). The Eagles scored one touchdown in the first quarter, two in the third and two in the fourth. The lone touchdown for the Lions was scored on a 14-yard TD run by senior Julian Trevino in the second quarter.

Offensively, Lions QB Dorian Hernandez threw for 107 yards on 14 of 24 passing while the team rushed for a collective total of 24 yards on 26 carries.

Defensively, La Feria gave up a whopping 313 yards on 48 carries and 57 passing yards. The Lions will now travel to Kingsville to take on the Brahmas.

DISTRICT 16-4A DII: The Raymondville Bearkats defeated the West Oso Bears 38-10 to remain undefeated this season. The Bearkats are now 6-0 overall and 1-0 in league action.

In the win, Raymondville scored 14 points in the first quarter, five points in the second, 16 points in the third and three in the fourth.

Offensively, the Bearkats rushed for 285 yards on 34 carries and passed for 46 yards on 3 of 14 passing. Justin Cantu rushed for 111 yards on 10 carries in his first game of the season. Marcus Capetillo rushed for 71 yards on nine carries and had a pick-6 on defense while QB Daniel Gutierrez rushed for 65 yards and two TDs on 10 carries.

Defensively, Raymondville allowed just eight first downs on the night and a total of 164 yards (97 rushing, 68 passing). Also, Freddy Rodriguez had a fumble return for a TD and Noe Zambrano had a sack for a safety.

The Bearkats host Progreso at home this week.

DISTRICT 16-3A DI: The Lyford Bulldogs (3-3) continued to pick up wins with a 20-17 victory over the Falfurrias Bulls (0-6).

Offensively, the Bulldogs amassed a total of 251 yards, with 61 yards passing and 251 yards rushing. On the ground, Javier Gonzalez led the team with 154 yards rushing and one touchdown on 15 carries while teammate Frank Moreno had 54 yards on 10 touches. Through the air, Chase Hinojosa threw for 61 yards and one touchdown on 9 of 13 passing.

Defensively, Lyford gave up a total of 328 yards. The Bulls rushed for 163 yards on 38 carries and threw for 165 yards on 4 of 11 passing.

The Bulldogs hit the road and take on Bishop on Friday.
