It took just three games for the Los Fresnos Lady Falcons to defeat the Lopez Lady Lobos on Saturday at home.
Los Fresnos won 25-9, 25-10, 25-8 in the first District 32-6A match of the season for each team. Strong offensive performances by Joseline Careveo and Alex Cano helped pave the way. Careveo tallied eight kills, and Cano added six. Alex Moya chipped in six digs on the defensive end to help the Lady Falcons.
Los Fresnos coach Becky Woods was pleased by the efficiency with which her team played.
“We’ve already played 29 games this year,” she said. “So we’re getting it down to where we’re putting people in the places we feel that we can work best at.”
The Lady Lobos looked as though they would be competitive after taking a 3-0 lead during the first game. The lead didn’t last long, though, and Los Fresnos stormed ahead, winning 25 of the next 31 points.
“I think we played a strong first game,” Lopez coach Jacquelynn Touchet said. “We still lost, but I was proud of the way they played. They were aggressive, they were all communicating, it was good. Then I feel like they kind of hit a slump.”
In Game 2, the Lady Falcons continued to thrive in all aspects of the game and at one point held a 17-2 lead, which was aided by a 12-point service stretch by Moya. Despite multiple timeouts by Touchet, the Lady Lobos failed to rally.
“(During the timeouts) I was trying to get them to understand and realize their potential,” Touchet said. “I really think this team has a lot of potential. I see it in practice, and I’ve seen it in other games in little spurts. I feel like now it’s getting it to last through the whole game.”
The final game of the match wasn’t any closer than the previous two. Los Fresnos outscored the Lopez at a rate of more than three points to one.
Woods was glad to see her team start off district play on the right foot.
“It is very important (to get a win in the first match of district play),” she said. “I told the girls after the game: ‘One down, 13 to go.’”
