Falcons pick up steam in win over Bobcats

LOS FRESNOS — The Los Fresnos Falcons endured a slow start in their football scrimmage against Edinburg High on Friday on the artificial turf of the practice field at their high school campus.

Despite the slow start, the Falcons finished strong by scoring four touchdowns during two quarters of game conditions while shutting out the Bobcats. After seeing the Bobcats win the controlled portion of the scrimmage 1-0, the Falcons cruised to a 28-0 triumph during the game situation periods.

Edinburg High scored the initial TD of the night on its second possession during the controlled portion. The Bobcats’ lone score came on a 4-yard run off left guard to cap a 13-play possession.

After that, it was all Falcons much to the delight of the many Los Fresnos fans who turned out to support their team and check out the recently installed artificial surface of the practice field at the high school.

“We finished up strong,” Los Fresnos coach Clint Finley said. “We finally got up and running. It took us a little time to get a feel for what we were up against. We had to make some adjustments and figure some things out.

“They had changed defenses from last year,” Finley added. “It’s a little tougher and it takes awhile when you don’t know exactly what to expect (as Edinburg High has a new coach in Joaquin Escobar this season). We didn’t have any film on them (showing their changes).”

Senior quarterback Rene Ortega was a standout on offense for the Falcons. He threw three TD passes covering 40 yards to Tirso Cruz, 42 yards to Pete Perez and 7 yards to Mark Rodriguez. Ortega then sprinted around the left side for 8 yards to the end zone for his team’s final score.

The Falcons are coming off a 9-4 season and a trip to the third round of the Class 6A playoffs.

“It was a slow start tonight, but luckily we were able to get it going,” Finley said.

The Falcons open the season next Thursday at Edinburg North.

The Bobcats, coming off a 2-8 campaign, play host to San Benito for their season opener next Friday.
