Falcons, ’Hounds meet in Star’s Game of the Week

Each won its District 32-6A opener this past week-end and each looked im-pressive doing so.

But when the teams face off on Friday at San Benito’s Bobby Morrow Stadium in the Valley Morning Star’s Game of the Week, something’s got to give.

The Falcons (3-1, 1-0 district) cruised to an easy 62-0 win over winless Brownsville Lopez at home on Friday.

“We definitely started (district) on a positive note,” said Falcons run-ning back Eli Cruz, who sparked his team with a 134-yard, four-touchdown rushing performance. “We’re just going to try to keep this rolling and keep the momentum going.”

Meanwhile, San Benito (2-2, 1-0) raced past Brownsville Hanna 39-14 at Sams Stadium in Brownsville on Saturday.

Running back Gabriel Vasquez was the man for the Greyhounds as closed out the first quarter with a 46-yard TD reception and followed it with an 80-yard TD run to start the second quarter. Less than two minutes later, Vasquez scored again from 3 yards out to make it 28-0 at the time.

“I was proud and im-pressed (with my team),” San Benito coach Dan Gomez said after the game. “It’s what we expect but we’ve still got some things to work on.

“(Winning the first game in district) is every coach’s top priority. but our district is tough. We don’t have time to sit back and enjoy (this win).”
