Edinburg High’s Gonzalez starts in Texas Tech’s baseball home opener

Edinburg High grad John Henry Gonzalez started and earned the win for Texas Tech in the team’s home opener against New Mexico State on Tuesday in Lubbock.

Gonzalez, a freshman, allowed one run on two hits and two walks in 5 1/3 innings with five strikeouts as the Red Raiders won 16-1 in his first career start. He is the fifth starting pitcher to take the mound for Texas Tech after the team played four games from Friday to Sunday.

Last year at Edinburg High, Gonzalez went 9-0 with a 0.89 ERA and 109 strikeouts against 31 walks in 63 innings. For his Bobcats career, he was 21-3 with a 0.74 ERA and 261 strikeouts in 152 1/3 innings.
