Los Fresnos Falcons senior Thiago Almeida is heading to the state wrestling meet next week.

Almeida (106 pounds) finished runner-up in his weight class Saturday in San Antonio, losing in the regional championship match to PSJA High’s Damian Aguilera.

The top two wrestlers in each class advanced to state, and the third-place finisher was an alternate.

Lady Falcons junior Katie Reyes (185) will be going to state as an alternate. Reyes won her third-place match 4-2 over Jada Castleberry of San Antonio Madison.

The San Benito Lady Greyhounds’ Adamary Cortez (148) lost in a third-place match to Lela Conley of San Antonio Churchill. It was a respectable fourth-place finish for Cortez, who won three straight matches to get to the third-place match.

San Benito’s boys who advanced came up short on the day. Ismael Lerma (106) lost 6-2 to Curtis White of San Antonio Churchill in the third round of the third-place bracket. Cristian Faz (195) lost in the same round to Nathan Crawford of San Antonio Reagan. Cody Garza (145) was outscored by Tyler Gutierrez of Schertz Clemens.
