East Valley Football: Playoff matchups solidify

With the completion of the 2021 high school football regular season Saturday night, teams began making plans for their bi-district playoff games next week.

The first East Valley teams to take to the field will do so Thursday night.

The San Benito Greyhounds will hit the road for a Class 6A Division II game against the Edinburg Vela Sabercats at 7 p.m. at Richard R. Flores Stadium in Edinburg.

In the sub-5A ranks, the La Feria Lions are scheduled to face Beeville in a Class 4A Division I matchup at 7 p.m. at Corpus Christi’s Cabaniss Multipurpose Stadium, and in Class 3A Division I, the Lyford Bulldogs take on Industrial at 7 p.m. at Odem.

In Class 2A Division I, the Santa Maria Cougars are set to battle Refugio at 7 p.m. in Refugio. In TAPPS, the Brownsville St. Joseph Bloodhounds are slated to play Houston Second Baptist at 6 p.m. at a site still to be determined in Houston.

East Valley Class 6A and 5A teams begin playoff action Friday.

The District 32-6A champion Harlingen South Hawks have a scheduled clash with the PSJA North Raiders in a Class 6A Division II game at 7:30 p.m. at Boggus Stadium, and the Los Fresnos Falcons are slated to meet the Mission High Eagles in a Class 6A Division I game at 7 p.m. at Hidalgo’s Bill Pate Stadium.

The Brownsville Veterans Memorial Chargers are set to compete with Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial in Class 5A Division I at 7:30 p.m. at Corpus Christi’s Buc Stadium. In Class 5A Division II, the Mercedes Tigers are scheduled to face Boerne Champion at 7 p.m. in Boerne.

Among sub-5A teams Friday, the Port Isabel Tarpons have a bi-district matchup with Carrizo Springs slated for 7:30 p.m. at Corpus Christi Calallen. And, in a TCSAAL state semifinal matchup, Marine Military Academy is scheduled to face Houston KIPP Sunnyside at 7:30 p.m. at Georgetown East View’s Patriot Field.

The only Saturday game on the schedule is a battle between traditional Rio Grande Valley powers. The Harlingen High Cardinals welcome the Edinburg High Bobcats for a 2 p.m. meeting at Boggus Stadium.
