Donna North settles on Castillo for season opener

Donna North coach Matthew Rokovich announced his starting quarterback for the season opener on Friday night, but the No. 1 won’t be the only guy who takes snaps under center.

“We’re going with (junior) C.J. (Castillo),” Rokovich said. “That doesn’t mean (senior) Gus (Alvarez) isn’t going to get any reps, because he will. It will depend on the situation.”

Rokovich’s team was one of the lucky ones in the Valley to get two scrimmages in — against Port Isabel and Weslaco East — before Hurricane Harvey threatened and eventually bypassed the Rio Grande Valley last week.

“I felt all along that our kids are very competitive. They’re going to go out and fight and do their very best,” Rokovich said. “We still have some growing to do. That’s why these next three non-district games are huge.”

Donna North kicks its season off at 7:30 p.m. Friday versus a new-look PSJA High team led by first-year coach Lupe Rodriguez. Last season, PSJA High picked up a 36-33 win against Donna North in the season opener for both squads.

“We’re playing a really good (PSJA) Bear team,” Rokovich said. “Last year when we played them, it was a war to the very end. I’m anticipating the same thing this year. The team that makes the least mistakes and wins special teams has a chance to win this football game.”
