WESLACO — District 32-6A completed the field events portion of its district track meet Monday at Bobby Lackey Stadium.
The top four athletes in each event will compete in the area meet.
Harlingen South’s Julian Hill finished first in the shot put and the discus.
“I feel good, I definitely want to come back for more,” he said. “I want to come back for area and hopefully do a lot better than I did today.”
Hill said he has learned a lot this season, even if he feels it was not his best performance. The senior opted for the Texas Relays instead of the Meet of Champions and had a good meet against some of the best throwers in the state.
“I have been working for this for seven years,” he said. “It is not easy. Some people are naturally gifted. I have had to work for it, so I am just going to keep working for it.”
Weslaco High sophomore Michael Luna is the high jump winner.
“Something I kind of expected for myself, as a freshman last year I would compete with the guys here,” he said. “I am excited, happy and I am looking forward to area.”
Los Fresnos junior Thomas Sandoval took gold in the pole vault. Sandoval was also a powerlifting state qualifier.
“13 feet is coming,” he said. “It has been a grind all season, and I really worked for it.”
Harlingen High and Harlingen South put distance between themselves and their rivals in the boys and girls team standings.
After the first day, Harlingen High has 77 points. Geovany Cisneros won the two-mile run, Christian Luna took first in the triple jump and Luis Galvan’s long jump win helped their team grab the advantage in the standings.
South is in second with 55 points, and Weslaco High is third with 31.
The Harlingen High and Harlingen South girls are tied with 63 points. South’s Isabella Marez topped the triple jump field, and Jasmine Ortiz took first in the shot put.
Harlingen High’s Emma Reyes won gold in the pole vault, Faith Franklin won the long jump and Jazmine Thompson finished first in the discus.
San Benito’s Deandra Ibarra won the two-mile race, and Weslaco High’s Jayda Hough was first in the high jump.
