WESLACO — District 32-5A opened up its district track & field meet Wednesday, completing the field event portion of the meet early in the day.
In the evening, the runners took to the track for the prelims. The district will finish the meet Friday.
Brownsville Veterans Memorial sophomore Gerry Gomez finished first in the triple jump and second in the high jump.
“I feel great about my jump, but I wanted to beat my personal record,” he said. “That is what I was aiming for, but I will get it next time.”
Mercedes’ David Clower jumped 5 feet, 10 inches to take first in the high jump. Tyrell Trevino, also from Mercedes, narrowly beat teammate Austin Davila for gold in the long jump.
Donna High’s Marco De Los Rios took first in the pole vault, Weslaco East’s David Trevino won the shot put, and Brownsville Pace’s Kevin Garcia beat Trevino for gold in the discus.
Edcouch-Elsa’s Haley Guzman, Jacqueline Medina and Jenifer Cruz swept the pole vault medals. Guzman cleared 10-6 and now shifts her focus to the area meet.
“It was OK, I know that I could have done better,” Guzman said. “I could have jumped another nine inches today and would have broken the district record.”
Donna High’s girls had a good day in the field events. Emily Jones took first in the high jump, clearing 5-2, and Samariah Gonzalez finished first in the long jump and second in the triple jump.
Mercedes’ Jaymie Flores beat Gonzalez in the triple jump.
Brownsville Lopez’s Chantal Pena finished first in the shot put and second in the discus. Keyla Olguin, also from Lopez, took gold in the discus.
The 3,200-meter run was completed, too. Rebecca Davila of Edcouch-Elsa and Donna High’s Kevin Hernandez finished first.
