Bibby, a 53-year veteran to snake handling, has been bitten by rattlesnakes 12 times and will be at the McAllen Convention Center for the final day of the expo talking to locals about the venomous snake that could by starring you in the eyes.

As the summer continues, Valley residents may encounter the deadly snakes while vacationing in outdoor areas or hunting.

“The people that come to these events generally get outdoors a lot, so they get the opportunity to let us tell them what to expect if they encounter one, what to do if they get bite. That is information they might not have otherwise,” Bibby said.

Bibby holds five Guinness World records. Bibby laid in a bath tub with 195 rattlesnakes for one of his records and has been featured by multiple publications throughout his career that date backs to 1969.

Bibby’s exhibits has taken him all over the country and Europe as well.

‘The Texas Snake Man’ has lost a leg due to a snake bite and has been bitten in the hand and stomach as well.

“We would love to have anybody come out and ask us questions, look to see what we are doing, come out and have some family fun,” Bibby said.

Today is the last day to check out the expo. The convention center will open at 11 a.m. and close at 6 p.m. for attendees.

World’s Outstanding Whitetails display makes return at Expo

Looking into the eyes of a trophy-mounted whitetail deer or other folklore-like animals can be mesmerizing. The colors, the depth almost brings the animal back to life.

The experience is unique and available to those who check out the amazing display this weekend during the 33rd annual Texas Hunters and Sportsman’s Expo at the McAllen Convention Center.

The coast-to-coast traveling mega display’s owner and creator, Jeff Eades, may have cut down his running time – driving all over the map, but he continues to bring his wildly popular and word renowned W.O.W – World’s Outstanding Whitetails display to McAllen each year, one of the collections including the Kings Collection.

Eades left Baltimore on Monday to head to his home in Peoria, Ill., pick up his trailer and display needs and started the haul to McAllen (1,300 miles) to begin setup on Thursday.

“I used to run a lot, 20-25 shows a year but I’m not running as much,” said Eades, adding those hours would run him “24/7 for eight to nine straight weeks sometimes, but I’ve been doing McAllen for the past 12 years. Not many can run a show and pack the people in like this show does and with so many vendors.”

The Expo has taken up even more space at the convention center, basically using every possible space for vendors, shows, displays and everything imaginable – and maybe even more – to do with the outdoors, from hunting and fishing to camping and traveling and more.

“I’ve always been into hunting and all that,” Eades said when asked about what gave him the idea for the display, which also includes sheds, European mounts and the East River Monster. “It’s just something I came up with and for really no reason.”

The show runs from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Texas Hunters Expo an event for entire families

The 33rd Annual Texas Hunters & Sportsman’s Expo is coming back to the McAllen Convention Center from July 19 through July 21. Expectations are rising as fast as attendance is growing each year.

“We have had solid crowds over the past 32 years, and the show’s attendance continues to grow each year. It really gets better each year.” show director Justin Curl said. “We have had solid crowds during the past 32 years, and the show’s attendance continues to grow each year. This three-day weekend event is expected to draw several thousand hunting and fishing enthusiasts and visitors from both sides of the Texas/Mexico border.

“We want to focus on the fact that we are going to have items for everyone and a variety of exhibits,” Curl said. “We will have smaller exhibits with more affordable items for everyone as well.”

This is the only show of its kind south of San Antonio and north of Monterrey, Mexico. The show features guides and outfitters from across the United States, Canada, Mexico and Africa, booking hunts for trophy whitetail, big game, exotics, bear, nilgai, moose, elk, mule deer, turkey, quail, dove, waterfowl, trophy bass and saltwater fishing trips, and more.

“This is not just a show for just the hunter,” Curl said. “This is a show for the angler and has become a family event/tradition in the RGV.”

Fishing guides and camps will be on hand as well to book that fishing trip of a lifetime. Don’t forget, boats and motors will be on sale as well.

“This is a show the entire family can enjoy,” Curl said. “There is something here for everyone. Wildlife art, hand-crafted rustic furniture, barbecue pits, smoked meats, gourmet foods and exotic and silver jewelry are just a few of the exhibits and attractions.

As always, another crowd-pleasing favorite is the free samples of the latest homemade jellies, jams, beef jerky and wild game jerky, roasted almonds and more. There will be several ladies exhibits, too. Chupacabra spices and others will have a tongue-numbing experience prepared for those wanna-be weekend chefs.

“The July Expo promises to be one of the best shows ever,” Curl said. “We’re bringing back all the ‘old’ favorites, but we continually add new exhibits each year.”

Bow and arrow marksman Frank Addington Jr., aka “the aspirin buster,” will perform all three days at the show. Doug Digger will dazzle with his rattlesnake pit and educate the public on rattlesnakes. Pedro Sors, host of the Con Cana Y Carrrete show also will be in attendance.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for children, and children 12 and under are free, courtesy of Academy Sports & Outdoors and L&F Distributors. The show runs from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., Friday, July 19; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, July 20; and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday, July 21.

Del Angel overwhelms field at McAllen City Amateur

Miguel Del Angel Jr. chipped onto the green from about 80 yards out and left the ball within a foot of the cup.

If the tournament wasn’t already out of reach prior to hole 15, it was then. He tapped in for that gave the Mission native a five-stroke lead as he breezed down the stretch to win his tournament-best sixth McAllen Amateur Golf Championship over the weekend at Champion Lakes Golf Course.

Angel was the only golfer under par for the two-day event, penciling in a 72-70 for a 2-under 142. HE recorded a 34 on the front nine Sunday to extend his lead to five over Gonzalez heading into the final nine holes.

“That was big,” Del Angel said of his approach on 15. “I was hitting some good shots on 10 and 11. On 13, I left myself a little longer putt and on 14 I missed it left – I’d rather keep a large lead but it’s hard to play with a lead. I almost try to thing I’m five down and chasing them to stay aggressive but you have to be conservatively aggressive on certain holes and then you have to be playing to the middle of the green.

The next closest golfer to Del Angel in championships is Luke Antonelli and Ron Kilby with three apiece. Antonelli has won the tournament in 2019, 2021 and 2023 – setting him up possibly for another odd year title in 2025.

Former McAllen Memorial golfer Raul Gonzalez, eagled No. 18 to break a tie with defending and three-time champion Antonelli to capture second at 145. After the putt, local fans threw out an emphatic cheer and Gonzalez did a pump fist and heaved the ball out of play in celebration.

“Miggy is a great champion. He’s unbelievable and he kept his foot on our throats and made it tough for us,” Gonzalez said. “Playing against these Valley legends, I was blacked out for about six holes, but I finished birdie-birdie-eagle so that was exciting, and to make a putt in front of all these fans, it was awesome.

“I told myself if I won it, I would be one and done, but I feel I have some unfinished business now.”

Albert Ochoa, the former No. 1 golfer in the NCAA when he played at Texas Christian University, finished fourth with a 147 total.

Angel and Ochoa, who have known and golfed together for many years, shared the lead after the first day at par-72. That round included drizzles and one rainy patch with winds sending the rain parallel to the course. After about a 45-minute delay, golfers returned to finish their rounds.

Former IDEA Quest mid-distance runner Tobias vying for Olympic bid

Former IDEA Edinburg Quest mid-distance runner Valery Tobias set out to chase her Olympic dreams in October of last year.

After a decorated five years at the University of Texas, Tobias joined the Brooks Beasts Track Club based out of Seattle in preparation for this year Olympic trials.

Tobias, who holds the University of Texas record in the indoor and outdoor 800m, finished in 2 minutes, 1.78 seconds during her heat, the 14th best time out of 36 competitors.

Her time was good enough to earn her a spot in today’s semifinal round of the event, with Tobias set to compete in the second of three heats.

Tobias is set to run again today at 8:11 p.m., with the finals set for tomorrow at 9:32 p.m. The former Longhorn will need to finish in the top two in her heat or post one of the next three best qualifying times to earn a spot in tomorrow’s finals. Fans can catch Tobias in action on Peacock.

Ochoa, Del Angel in the lead at McAllen City Amateur

Albert Ochoa and Miguel Del Angel Jr. each shot par 72 and hold a slim lead heading into today’s final round of the 22nd McAllen Amateur Golf Championship at Champion Lakes Golf Course in McAllen.

The two will be paired as the final group when they tee off at 2:05 p.m., weather permitting.

Raul Gonzalez is alone in third at 1-over-par with a 73. Gonzalez led a good portion of the day during Saturday’s rainy round but then bogeyed holes 5, 6 and 8 and double bogeyed nine to drop behind the leaders.

Play was suspended at one point when the skies opened up and gusts of rain whipped across the course. After about 45 minutes and some work done on the greens, golfers returned to the course.

Four golfers, including three-time and defending champion Luke Antonelli sit three strokes behind the leaders at 75. Along with Antonelli are Arnoldo Curiel, Willie Gonzalez and McLean Beckwith.

Angel has won the event five times (2022, 2016, 2013, 2010 and 2008). The next closest is Antonelli (2023, 2021, 2019) and Ron Kilby (2007, 2005, 2003). Ricardo Samar, the 2018 champion, is tied for 11th at 77 and 2004 champion Ross Ledesma is 12th at 78. Two-time champion Genaro Davila is tied for 23rd at 8-over.

Ochoa, from Edinburg, was once the No. 1 ranked NCAA Div. I golfer on the country while playing for TCU. This is his second time competing in the event and heed some of last year’s tournament.

Champion flight tee times begin at 12:37 p.m. today.

A TIGER TALE

Taylor Crozier is 11-over heading into today’s final round. However, the Corpus Christi native may be the biggest celebrity on the course. A video of Crozier went viral in March, 2016, as the then 11-year-old teed off in a tournament in front of a watching Tiger Woods.

Crozier sank the shot, recording a hole-in-one, sending the crowd into an uproar and celebrating with high fives all around. Then Woods ran up to him and gave him a big hug. Tiger teed off next – but it was Crozier’s shot that was the talk of the day.

“I was really excited when I saw the ball go in the cup,” Crozier told ABC, one of the many media outlets that showed the video. “All of a sudden I just felt my feet lift off the ground a little bit.”
