Total Dominance: CC Miller routs CC Veterans in season opener

CORPUS CHRISTI — On most nights, Corpus Christi Miller’s offense is the catalyst behind their big wins. The night belonged to their defense on Friday.

Led by five takeaways and one defensive touchdown, the Buccaneers delivered a statement win to open the season, taking down Corpus Christi Veterans 41-7 during a non-district contest Thursday at Buccaneer Stadium in Corpus Christi.

“We were sluggish to start,” Corpus Christi Miller head coach Justen Evans said. “With the 106 degree weather, then we have what feels like 1000-pounds of sleeves and clothes on, we were kind of running in mud to start the game. At halftime we came out and made some great adjustments. Just shoutout to our defense. They played lights out today.”

The Buccaneers were jolted to life after a sluggish start to the season, with senior outside linebacker George Simmons providing the spark on a pick-6 of Corpus Christi Veterans quarterback Noah Endres.

A 20 yard catch-and-run by senior running back Broderick Taylor added to the Buccaneers lead during the second quarter, giving them a 13-0 lead heading into the break.

Then, the floodgates opened.

A pair of third quarter takeaways helped the Buccaneers balloon their lead to five scores during the period, with a fumble recovery by senior linebacker LaMarcus Cullum turning into an eight yard Eathan Vela touchdown and an interception by Donovan Cristan leading to a 51-yard touchdown reception by Roderick Taylor.

“Six of our guys on defense have been starting since they were freshman,” Evans said. “Those are four-year starters now since they’re seniors. We have a veteran defensive line. Our coordinator has done a phenomenal job getting them ready to play so hats off to them.”

The Buccaneers put the final touches on the game early in the fourth, with Cristan’s second interception of the day setting up a three yard touchdown run by quarterback Trevor Long.

Long’s touchdown marked the sixth Buccaneers’ athlete to find the endzone during the contest.

Corpus Christi Veterans got on the board late, with running back Andrew Charlebois breaking a 47-yard touchdown run during the final two minutes to make it a 41-7 ball game. He finished with 120 yards and one score on 24 carries.

Long led Miller’s offensive onslaught, completing 20-of-32 passes for 254 yards and three scores, adding one carry for three yards and a touchdown.

Running back Broderick Taylor and do-it-all athlete Corey Holmes combined for 149 rushing yards, while Roderick Taylor paced the wideouts with five catches for 95 yards and a score. Vela added 81 yards and one touchdown on five catches.

“Its a blessing to have so many offensive weapons,” Evans said. “At the same time, we have to do a better job of punching it in. We left like three scores out there. I’m not happy about that, but we’ll fix it this week and be ready to go. It starts tomorrow. We’re going to come in and flush today out and lift. That’s what we’re going to do. We’re going to take it one day at a time and not look ahead.”

The Buccaneers (1-0) turn their attention to Seguin next week, hosting the Matadors at Buccaneer Stadium at 7 p.m. on Sept. 6.

The Chargers (0-1) will look to bounce back at 7 p.m. Thursday against intracity rival Corpus Christi Carroll.

Charging Forward: Brownsville Veterans cruises past PSJA Memorial in opener

PHARR — Brownsville Veterans needed just one offensive play to showcase the skill that led them to last year’s state semifinals.

The Chargers’ started the season with a bang as junior fullback Cesar Belmontes broke free for a 51-yard touchdown run on their first snap against PSJA Memorial and Brownsville Veterans never looked back in a 34-3 victory Thursday at PSJA ISD Stadium in Pharr.

“The kids came out and executed and did a great job with the challenge that we had in front of us. We didn’t get to scrimmage anybody this year, completely out of our hands, but it was our first chance to go against a different colored jersey and it showed,” Brownsville Veterans head coach J.C. Ramirez said.

Despite it being their first action of the 2024 season, Brownsville Veterans had it going early with 24 first-half points off touchdowns by Belmontes, a 9-yard run by senior fullback Alvin Trevillion and a 1-yard sneak by senior quarterback Storm Montoya that capped off a 91-yard scoring drive for a 24-3 halftime advantage

Montoya went on to toss a 38-yard touchdown to Calvin Trevillion in the second half as the junior back caught a pass over the middle and broke two tackles to hit paydirt.

Chargers’ kicker Roman Reyna aided the scoring with a pair of successful field goals from distances of 48 and 28 yards out.

“Execution-wise, we have the benefit of having, in my eyes, the No. 1 player in the Valley without a doubt in Storm Montoya. He does what he needs to do to run our system and we’re extremely blessed to have him,” Ramirez said.

The junior Belmontes led the Chargers’ offense with 122 yards on 12 carries, Alvin Trevillion had 66 yards on seven carries and Calvin Trevillion finished with one touchdown catch for 38 yards and added 48 rushing yards on just two carries. Montoya finished with 37 passing yards, 14 rushing yards and two scores.

PSJA Memorial made a push to get in the endzone late but the Brownsville Veterans defense held strong inside their own 5-yard line to keep the Wolverines out.

Their only points came off a 50-yard Omar Garcia field goal midway through the first quarter after recovering a Chargers’ fumble in plus territory. Running back Emi Colunga led the Wolverines with 42 rushing yards, while quarterback Ryan Reyna threw for 35 yards and ran for 23 more.

The Brownsville Veterans defense finished with two takeaways on an interception by Tyson Rios and a fumble recovery by Mickey Rodriguez, and only surrendered two first downs across the game’s first three quarters.

“We’re lucky to have two coordinators right now that have a wealth of experience and it shows. Defensively, coach Benny Ellison comes in and has been around some really good programs, so we’re lucky to have him and the kids have bought into his style of our 3-3-5 stack,” Ramirez said.

Brownsville Veterans will aim for a 2-0 start to the 2024 season as the Chargers host Brownsville St. Joseph at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Brownsville Veterans High School in Brownsville.

PSJA Memorial, meanwhile, will look to bounce back in Week 2 with a non-district game against McAllen High scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium in McAllen.

Brownsville Veterans returns key pieces from its fifth-round playoff squad a season ago who are looking for a repeat of last year’s success. That will take the Chargers coming together as they move up to the Class 6A level.

PSJA Memorial, meanwhile, started last season 7-0 and qualified for the playoffs for the first time in 12 years. The Wolverines have a chance to prove they can play with some of the Valley’s top teams as PSJA Memorial prepares for District 15-5A DI action in three weeks.

PSJA HIGH AT SHARYLAND PIONEER, 7 P.M. FRIDAY AT RICHARD THOMPSON STADIUM IN MISSION

Friday night’s matchup between the Bears and Diamondbacks pits two of South Texas’ top passing offenses against each other.

Both squads will have new quarterbacks taking snaps this season as PSJA High senior Myles Lopez makes his debut with the Bears after transferring from Edinburg Vela, and Sharyland Pioneer will have a new signal-caller behind center for the first time in four seasons. Both teams are coming off district titles in their respective districts and classes last season, so Friday night’s first look at the Bears and Diamondbacks sets up for an intriguing meeting.

MISSION VETERANS AT MISSION HIGH, 7:30 P.M. FRIDAY AT TOM LANDRY STADIUM IN MISSION

The Battle of Conway between the crosstown rival Eagles and Patriots will showcase quarterback play as three-year starter Diego Salinas leads Mission High against first-year starter Cameron Sarinana at Mission Veterans. The city of Mission has historically produced some of the Valley’s best passers, and these two are primed for big seasons leading their respective teams.

The Eagles hold a 3-2 advantage in their last five head-to-head meetings with Mission Veterans, emerging victorious in the previous two.

RIO GRANDE CITY AT ROMA, 7:30 P.M. FRIDAY AT GLADIATOR ARENA IN ROMA

This year’s Starr County Super Bowl is the first game of a new era for Rio Grande City as former Rattlers football great Abel Gonzalez takes over head coaching duties after 14 years at Grulla. The Rattlers will go from a ground-and-pound to a spread offense with Gonzalez at the helm.

Roma, meanwhile, is fresh off winning a share of its first district title in program history in 2023 and is looking to start this season on the right foot with a rivalry win over RGC. The Gladiators won last year’s matchup 36-22 to snap a three-game losing streak against the Rattlers.

Top Cat: Edinburg Vela’s Lefevre named No. 1 returning player in RGV

EDINBURG – It doesn’t take long to notice Edinburg Vela’s Geoffrey Lefevre on the field. Standing at 6-foot-4, 215 pounds, the senior signal caller looks the part of a prototypical quarterback.

Lefevre doesn’t just look the part, however, as he possesses the arm talent and football IQ to sling it with the best of them. With three years of experience under his belt, along with more than 5,000 career passing yards and 44 career passing touchdowns, the Sabercats’ QB1 has earned the title of No. 1 in the 2024 RGVSports.com Top 30 returning players poll.

“I feel like I’ve had a target on my back since Donna,” Lefevre said. “I feel like guys had a little extra in the tank for me. But honestly, you always want to think you’re the best. You just have to keep yourself humble though and embrace the grind.”

Former Donna High and current Edinburg Vela quarterback Geoffrey Lefevre (12) throws a pass. (Joel Martinez | The Monitor)

Lefevre spent the first three years of his high school career at Donna High, seeing action as early as his freshman year with the Redskins. He finished that season with 467 passing yards and four touchdowns in just six games of action.

Year 2 of his career saw him split reps at quarterback, with him seeing the field in all 11 games and finishing the year with 1,355 passing yards and 16 touchdowns.

Last year, however, Lefevre took over the reins full time, repaying his coaches with career bests in completion percentage (60.7%), passing yards (3,324) and passing touchdowns (24).

Lefevre’s final year will look different than the past three, with an offseason coaching move by his dad landing the senior gunslinger at Edinburg Vela this year.

“It has been a new transition for my final year,” Lefevre said. “My dad and I moved to a new school and the guys really welcomed me there. The O-line, the offense, the defense, they all welcomed me with open arms. I don’t really feel pressure.

A new team presents new challenges for the four-year letter winner, who is tasked with learning a new offense and earning the trust of his new coaches and teammates.

Add in the pressure of past success and being ranked as the No. 1 player in the RGV heading into the season, and expectations couldn’t be higher for the Sabercats’ quarterback.

Lefevre is ready to embrace the challenge, however, looking to continue the tradition of excellence set at Vela over the past few years.

“I feel like the past few years have prepared me to excel my senior year, along with the love that my brothers on the field have shown me,” Lefevre said. “We’re hungry this year. This team ended on a good season last year and we want to keep that going. There is tradition at Vela. Just expect a lot of explosive plays from us this year. We got some dawgs on offense and defense. We just got to go in and love the work. We can’t get bored of repetition, and we have to want to be the best.”

RGVSports.com Top 30 Football Player Countdown (No. 2-5)

The 2024 high school football season is officially underway, with teams hitting the practice field across the Rio Grande Valley.

With Week 1 of the regular season looming, the RGVSports.com staff compiled a list of the top 30 returning RGV football players for the 2024 season.

Our list continues with a trio of PSJA North standouts and one of the RGV’s top athletes out of Rio Hondo.

The reveal of the top player is out in the 2024 RGVSports.com Football Tab today.

Check out the other athletes on our list below:

No. 6-10

No. 11-15

No. 16-20

No. 21-25

No. 26-30

PSJA North linebacker Steven Garza. (Andrew Cordero | Special to RGVSports)

No. 2: LB Steven Garza, Senior, PSJA North

2023 Stats: 109 total tckls, 12 TFL, 7 QB hurries, 2 sacks, 1 FF, 1 FR

Notes: PSJA North’s “Blackshirts Defense” should be among the area’s best once again this year and Garza is a big reason why. The speedy, physical linebacker possess high football IQ to diagnose a play before it happens. After that, Garza is ready to meet any ball carrier head on and make the stop by any means necessary. His three-year varsity experience should only make him better as he heads into his final year with the Raiders.

PSJA North running back Ethan Guerra. (Andrew Cordero | Special to RGVSports)

No. 3: RB Ethan Guerra, Junior, PSJA North

2023 Stats: 153 car, 1572 yds, 21 TD; 13 rec, 374 yds, 3 TD

Notes: Guerra has been one of the RGV’s most dominant ball carriers since his freshman year in 2022, racking up 2,677 rushing yards and 34 rushing touchdowns during the past two years. Year 3 should be no different, with Guerra likely serving as the focal point of PSJA North’s offense once again. The junior running back possesses deceptive strength to run between the tackles, while his 4.6 speed makes him a threat to break off a long touchdown run in the blink of an eye. Guerra very well could be among the top rushers not only in the RGV, but the state this season.

Rio Hondo athlete Keyan Lopez. (Victor Dominguez | Special to RGVSports)

No. 4: ATH Keyan Lopez, Senior, Rio Hondo

2023 Stats: 47 rec, 829 yds, 13 TD; 151 total tckls, 15 TFL, 4 sacks, 2 INT, 2 FF, 1 FR, 1 BLK

Notes: Most teams in the RGV would love to have Lopez on their roster. Rio Hondo is lucky enough to have him on its. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound athlete can do it all on the gridiron and does it at a high level. On offense, Lopez is a physical wideout able to outmuscle most defensive backs. Defensively, Lopez brings that same physicality, able to lay the hammer down on ball carriers, while also possessing the speed to cover almost anybody on the field. An MVP-caliber season could be on the horizon for Lopez as he looks to go out with a bang his senior season.

PSJA North offensive lineman Jordan Brewster. (Andrew Cordero | Special to RGVSports)

No. 5: OL Jordan Brewster, Senior, PSJA North

2023 Stats: 91 pancakes

Notes: Replacing offensive linemen will be a big task for PSJA North this year. The young offensive line will benefit from the return of Brewster, arguably the top offensive lineman in the area this season. The 6-foot-4, 315-pound lineman can play any position in the trenches but likely will start at center for the Raiders this year. He’ll also bring a much-needed nastiness up front needed for PSJA North’s physical offense. When all is said and done, Brewster very well could be in for an all-state caliber season before moving on to playing on Saturdays.

Coastal Bend Preseason Top 4 Teams

With RGVSports.com expanding into the Coastal Bend area, the sports staff decided to find the top football  teams in the area heading into the 2024 season.

The result of that culminated in the first-ever RGVSports.com Coastal Bend Top 4 poll. Below is the preseason rankings heading into the new year as voted on by the RGVSports.com staff. Updates to the poll will be coming every Monday following the conclusion of the previous week’s games.

Corpus Christi Miller running back Broderick Taylor (21) rumbles in for a touchdown. (Miguel Roberts | Brownsville Herald)

No. 1 Corpus Christi Miller

The Buccaneers open as the No. 1 team in the Coastal Bend area and rightfully so, returning 16 starters from last year’s Region IV-5A DI finalist squad. Offensively, Miller fields one of the state’s most explosive units, averaging a whopping 57.6 points and 536.6 yards per game. The Buccaneers return weapons at every key position on that side of the ball, with quarterback Trevor Long (3,767 passing yards, 57 passing touchdowns) commanding the passing attack, while potential DI running back Broderick Taylor (2,333 rushing yards, 29 rushing touchdowns) securing the run game. Do-it-all playmaker Corey Holmes (1,609 total yards, 28 total touchdowns) gives the Buccaneers another weapon through the air and on the ground, while senior OL Devin Cage anchors the trenches. The defensive unit isn’t far behind from the offense, returning eight starters as well, including dynamic linebackers Delson Cavaness (166 total tackles, 14 TFL) and Lamarcus Cullum (146 total tackles, 23 TFL) and disruptive defensive linemen Steven Richardson (20 TFL, 7 sacks) and George Simmons 10 TFL, 6.5 sacks). A move down to Class 5A DII and a loaded returning class puts the Buccaneers in prime position to make another run at a regional title and more. They’ll be battle tested to make that type of run by the time the postseason rolls around, with non-district tilts against Class 6A DII state champion DeSoto, Corpus Christi Veterans and Cuero on their schedule, as well as a possible district-title deciding matchup against Gregory-Portland during the backend of their season.

Flour Bluff quarterback Jayden Paluseo. (Victor Dominguez | Special to RGVSports)

No. 2 Flour Bluff

The title of No. 2 ranked team in the Coastal Bend area belongs to the Hornets, a squad favored by many to win the District 15-5A DI title. An explosive offensive attack is led by third-year starting quarterback Jayden Paluseo and star wideout Cameran Dickson, a Vanderbilt commit. The duo hooked up 66 times through the air for 1,089 yards and 17 touchdowns, making them arguably the top quarterback-receiver duo in the area. The defense will need to fill some holes, with only five starters returning from last year’s squad. The Hornets make the jump from 5A DII to 5A DI this season, moving into a district that features nine teams. A long district schedule is made tougher with games against PSJA North and Corpus Christi Veterans to close out the regular season. The Hornets should be up to the task, however, with a third-straight district title possibly in the cards.

No. 3 Corpus Christi Veterans

The Eagles open the season as the No. 3 team in the inaugural RGVSports.com Coastal Bend rankings, coming off an 8-4 season a year ago. They’ll be a fairly young team in 2024, but return players at key positions to keep them in the hunt this year. Junior quarterback Billy White III commands the offense for a second straight year, fresh off a breakout 3,000 passing yard, 30 passing touchdown season. He’s one of only four returners on the offensive side of the ball, but his experience and on-field coaching should help the brand-new skill position group. Linebacker Chris Vasquez will lead a defense that brings back just five starters, entering the year as the team’s top returner in tackles (81 total) and sacks (6). A Week 1 tilt against No. 1 Corpus Christi Miller will test the Eagles, but should serve as valuable experience for the team as they prepare for an eight-game district schedule.

No. 4 Gregory-Portland

The final spot in the Coastal Bend preseason poll belongs to the Wildcats, a team which has played into at least two rounds of the playoffs each of the last three seasons. Head coach Brent Davis has turned Gregory-Portland into a yearly contender since taking the reins in 2021 and this year should be no different, with a loaded offensive unit returning from last year’s 9-3 squad. QB Reed Dooms (2,242 passing yards, 25 passing touchdowns) and RB Cody Adame (1,220 rushing yards, 10 rushing touchdowns) give the Wildcats a dynamic one-two punch in the backfield, while receivers Brandon Coates and Ryder Harrison provide weapons outside. The biggest question for Gregory-Portland will be its defense, returning just two starters from last year. The unit will have plenty of time to mesh, however, with only five district contests on the schedule for the Wildcats. Non-district games against Calallen, Sinton and Alice should have the Wildcats ready to roll by the time district rolls around. Their Week 10 matchup against Miller is likely the biggest game on their schedule this year, with the contest likely deciding the district champion in 14-5A DII.

RGVSports.com 2024 Sub-5A Preseason Poll

RGVSports.com Sub-5A Preseason Poll

No. 1 Brownsville St. Joseph

Brownsville. St. Joseph sophomore QB Gavin Cisneros (15) is the RGVSports.com Football Player of the Week. (Miguel Roberts | Brownsville Herald)

The Bloodhounds lead off the RGVSports.com Sub-5A Preseason Poll at No. 1 with several key pieces returning in important positions for the 2024 campaign. Junior quarterback Gavin Cisneros accounted for over 2,800 total yards and 24 touchdowns last season and has two dangerous weapons to get the ball to in Claudio Torres (61 receptions, 793 yards, five touchdowns) and Andre Cristiano (42 receptions, 519 yards, four touchdowns). Senior offensive/defensive lineman Diego De la Cruz, who recently committed to play college football at the University of Texas at El Paso, moves bodies on the front line to set the tone on both sides of the ball. Emile Gonzalez also anchors the D-line to lead the Bloodhounds’ front seven while Torres  (58 tackles, seven tackles for loss) goes both ways to star in the St. Joseph secondary.

No. 2 Port Isabel

Port Isabel Tarpon quarterback Bryan Martinez hands the ball off Friday night as Tristian prepares to score a touchdown against Raymondville Bearkats. (Miguel Roberts/The Brownsville Herald)

The Port Isabel Tarpons begin the year in pursuit of a third straight District 16-4A DII title, and with an experienced group that brings back 14 starters, a three-peat is a real possibility. Fifth-year head coach Tony Villarreal and the Tarpons finished with a 9-3 overall record last season and advanced to the area round.

This season, Port Isabel looks to ride its Slot-T offense to another district title and hopefully past the area round.

The Tarpons are led by a pair of seniors in the trenches with defensive end Christopher Gonzalez anchoring the P.I. defense, while guard Steven Martinez leads the offensive line. Gonzalez was named 16-4A DII’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2023 and earned Texas Sports Writers Association Class 4A Third Team All-State honors with 62 total tackles, 28 hurries, 15 tackles for loss and seven sacks. He’ll also see action at tight end to aid the offense.

Look for running back Luis Ramos to lead the Tarpons backfield after posting 780 yards and nine rushing touchdowns on 85 carries last season with sophomore Bryan Martinez set for his second year starting at quarterback. Defensively, linebackers Edward Garza and Daniel Galvan both earned all-district honors and are expected to take another step forward.

No. 3 Rio Hondo

Rio Hondo Bobcat wide receiver Keyan Lopez (8) catches the ball Thursday evening against Port Isabel Tarpons. (Miguel Roberts/The Brownsville Herald)

Rio Hondo is loaded with 13 returning starters and playmakers on both sides of the ball entering the 2024 season. The Bobcats have one of the Valley’s top quarterback-receiver connections in the form of seniors Ruben Atkinson and Keyan Lopez. Atkinson threw for 2,423 yards and 20 scores last season while Lopez caught 47 passes for 829 yards and 13 touchdowns. Lopez doubles as a linebacker after tallying 151 total tackles, four sacks and two interceptions in 2023, all team-highs. Seniors Nate Sosa and Gavin Perez also provide solid targets at receiver for Atkinson. The Bobcats will be a threat in 16-3A DI with their playmakers leading the way.

No. 4 Lyford

Lyford’s Adrian Chavez (4) carries the ball into the endzone during a 44-yard run against La Villa in a sub-5A matchup at La Villa High School on Friday, Sept. 1, 2023, in La Villa. (Joel Martinez | [email protected])

The Bulldogs round out the RGVSports.com Sub-5A top teams after finishing as runners-up in District 16-3A DI in 2023.

The Lyford offense will have a new starter at quarterback for the third consecutive season but that hasn’t stopped the Bulldogs from putting up big numbers. Senior Adrian Chavez is set to take over quarterback duties after a standout junior season spent at receiver and safety. He posted 860 receiving yards, 188 rushing yards and 15 total touchdowns. He’ll team with running back and linebacker Pedro Rosas, who rushed for 600 yards and five scores last season, to keep the chains moving. The Bulldogs also have some beef on the offensive line and front seven with two-way players Gael Silva, Aiden Rubalcaba and Alex Castro. Lyford has the tools to compete for another district title in a competitive 16-3A DI.

Although this practice is open to the public, practices at the Vaqueros Performance Center will generally be closed to the public. Tryouts are also closed to the public and may only be attended by participants.

High school coaches can set up visits to practice by reaching out to administrative assistant for football Alexis Garcia at [email protected].

Limited Season Tickets Remain Available

UTRGV will practice throughout this academic year while ramping up for its first season of competition in 2025. Fans can reserve season tickets with a $25 deposit at UTRGVTickets.com. Deposits are non-refundable and non-transferable and will be applied toward season ticket purchases.

UTRGV Athletics is finalizing details regarding ticket prices and will announce prices in September. The plan is to offer a variety of price points with season tickets as low as $99 to ensure there is something for everyone.

UTRGV is hard at work to ensure the Rio Grande Valley community has the best game day experience possible. As a part of that process, it has been determined that capping season ticket deposits at 6,000 will be necessary to accommodate enough seats for season ticket holders, UTRGV students, the marching band, the player pass list, and the visiting team pass list.

Fans have currently placed more than 4,900 season ticket deposits, meaning less than 1,100 season ticket deposits remain available for fans to guarantee their spot for the inaugural season of UTRGV football in 2025.

Season tickets will include games at Robert & Janet Vackar Stadium. UTRGV will host one game at Sams Stadium in Brownsville every year. Season ticket holders will have the option to purchase discounted tickets for the Brownsville game during the select-a-seat process.

Season tickets are required to purchase season parking passes and tailgating spots.

Select-A-Seat/Suite

Fans who have placed their deposit(s) for UTRGV football season tickets will have the opportunity to select their seats at Robert & Janet Vackar Stadium in the spring of 2025. The number of seats available to select will be based upon the number of deposits placed (i.e.: four deposits = four seats). Fans will be assigned a date and time to make their selection based on their Vaqueros Loyalty Points rank. The UTRGV ticket office will provide fans with a map of every section detailing available rows and seats ahead of their assigned date and time.

For the inaugural 2025 football season, only points accumulated through January 15 will be considered for the select-a-seat process. Loyalty points accumulated after the January 15 deadline will determine priority for future seat selection, seat upgrades, and additional ticket requests/benefits.

Fans interested in a suite will be assigned an earlier date and time, also based on their Vaqueros Loyalty Point rank. Points accumulated through November 15 will be considered for the select-a-suite process. The select-a-suite process will take place in December. Suites will require a 4-year commitment.

Fans will have the ability to renew or upgrade their tickets every season. It is important to renew season tickets before the renewal deadline to keep the same seats. After the renewal deadline, seats may be released and available for purchase.

In the event there is ticket inventory remaining after the completion of the select-a-seat process, those seats will become available to purchase at a later date. However, neither the possibility of availability nor the potential quantity available is guaranteed.

How Vaqueros Loyalty Points Work

Vaqueros Loyalty Points program will ensure that the seat and suite selection processes are fair, equitable, and transparent.

Additionally, Vaqueros Loyalty Points will determine priority when it comes to allocating seat relocation requests, new or additional season ticket requests, premium seating requests, parking, tailgating, neutral site and postseason ticket requests, and other giving benefits for all sports.

Vaqueros Loyalty Points are earned based on donations to UTRGV Athletics and season ticket purchase history dating back to 2017-18. Each giving category is assigned a specific point value which is added to each member’s point total. Point values from each category will be combined to create point totals that will determine rankings, which will be determined quarterly and provided upon request.

Supporters earn one point for every $100 of lifetime giving to athletics, one point for every $100 of giving to athletics in the current year, one point per year of giving to athletics, five points for season ticket(s) purchased per sport per year, and 100 points per $10,000 pledged as a donation. Additionally, supporters can earn one-time points totaling three for every $1,000 of sponsorship spend dating back to 2017-18, 10 points for being a graduate of UTRGV and its legacy institutions (awarded once, not per degree), 10 points for being a lifetime Varsity Club member, 20 points for being a former student-athlete who graduated from UTRGV or its legacy institutions, and 100 points for Silver Buckle Society members (those who have generously gifted at least $1 million to UTRGV).

SAN BENITO The RGVSports.com Game of the Week kicks off the regular season with a top 10 matchup between the No. 1-ranked PSJA North Raiders and No. 10-ranked San Benito Greyhounds.

The action between upper and lower Valley powers is slated for 7 p.m. Friday at Bobby Morrow Stadium in San Benito.

Both the Raiders and Greyhounds are known for playing a physical brand of football and their collision in Week 1 is set to showcase their smash-mouth style.

PSJA North is coming off a third-round playoff appearance and a 12-1 overall record in 2023. The Raiders bring back 12 starters including all-purpose runner Ethan Guerra (1,572 rushing yards, 21 touchdowns; 374 receiving yards, three touchdowns), offensive lineman Jordan Brewster and first-year starting quarterback Daren Garcia. Defensively, senior linebackers Steven Garza and Jesse Montez both recorded over 100 tackles last season and are ready to lead the “Blackshirt Defense.”

San Benito is gunning for its 11 straight playoff appearance after finishing the 2023 campaign in the area round with a 10-2 record. The Greyhounds return only seven starters but they’ll lean on the duo of Adam Cortez and Gabriel Covarrubias as versatile athletes to lead the way. Offensive linemen Ethan Ruiz and Zaylen Graham are a force up front while junior quarterback Tyler Ruiz, who transferred from Edinburg North, starts behind center to run the San Benito offense. Senior linebacker Armando Garcia and senior defensive back Kian Jones are set to spearhead San Benito’s “War Dog Defense.”
