UTRGV Football to play Texas A&M-Kingsville in 2027

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Monday that the UTRGV football team will host Texas A&M-Kingsville on Sept. 4, 2027.

“As we build our schedules for the next few years, it was important to us to make sure that in the spirit of camaraderie, we host the closest college football team outside the Rio Grande Valley,” UTRGV vice president and director of athletics Chasse Conque said. “I appreciate athletic director Steve Roach and his willingness to make scheduling this matchup a priority for our fans. We have a great relationship between departments and coaching staffs. [UTRGV head] coach [Travis] Bush and [Texas A&M-Kingsville head] coach [Michael] Salinas are good friends and have already worked together to host multiple camps. This should be a great contest for both our teams, our fans, students, and alumni.”

UTRGV Football currently has four nonconference football games scheduled from 2025-2030 — Sul Ross State on Aug. 30, 2025 at home, Texas A&M-Kingsville on Sept. 4, 2027 at home, Texas State on Sept. 11, 2027 on the road, and Texas State on Sept. 14, 2030.

$25 for ‘25

Fans can reserve season tickets with a $25 deposit for the inaugural season of UTRGV football in 2025 at GoUTRGV.com/Tickets. Deposits are non-refundable and non-transferable and will be applied toward season ticket purchases.

UTRGV Athletics is still finalizing details regarding ticket prices and will announce prices in September. The plan is to offer a variety of price points with season tickets as low as $99 to ensure there is something for everyone.

Season tickets will include games at Robert and Janet Vackar Stadium. UTRGV will host one game at Sams Stadium in Brownsville every year. Season ticket holders will have the option to purchase tickets for the Brownsville game during the select-a-seat process.

UTRGV Athletics is giving priority for choosing seats to current V Club members, season ticket holders of any sport, and corporate partners as part of the Vaqueros Loyalty Points program. UTRGV officially joins Southland Conference

EDINBURG — UTRGV officially became a member of the Southland Conference on Monday with July 1 marking the turn of the NCAA athletic calendar. UTRGV athletics held a ceremony Monday afternoon to unveil new Southland Conference logos on Sam Williams Court inside the UTRGV Fieldhouse.

“Definitely woke up with a little bit different pep in my step and I think our coaches and staff and hopefully student-athletes would say the same thing,” UTRGV vice president and athletic director Chasse Conque said. “So much has transpired since we made the official announcement back in March, but going back to the reasons why, this was solely focused on our student-athletes. It was in their best interest, we felt, to put them in a league that had a regional footprint. I love the institutions that we’re going to compete against, and now with the addition of Stephen F. Austin over the last couple weeks, you’ve got seven (schools) from right here in the state of Texas, five in Louisiana, so we’re really excited about today and excited about the future of UTRGV in the Southland Conference.”

The Southland Conference is composed of 12 full-time members — Houston Christian, Incarnate Word, Lamar, McNeese, New Orleans, Nicholls, Northwestern State, Stephen F. Austin, Southeastern, Texas A&M-Commerce,Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and UTRGV.

UTRGV will compete in the Southland Conference in volleyball, women’s soccer, cross country, basketball, golf, tennis, track & field, baseball, and football beginning in 2025.

UTRGV’s men’s soccer and women’s swimming and diving teams will continue to compete in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). UTRGV was a member of the WAC from 2013-2024.

UTRGV FOOTBALL NOTES

UTRGV football will begin fall practice at the beginning of September, UTRGV head football coach Travis Bush said Monday.

“We’re not having a training camp in August. They won’t come until school starts, we won’t practice really til September, but it’s going to be broken up like three mini spring trainings,” Bush said. “We’ll go about three weeks of good practice and give them an open week at the end of each month and do that September, October, November, so really you’re looking at about three spring balls worth of practice.”

Conque and Bush both confirmed UTRGV’s first football game in program history will be played on Aug. 30, 2025 against Sul Ross at Robert and Janet Vackar Stadium in Edinburg.

“We are going to kickoff against Sul Ross on Aug. 30, 2025 at night at Vackar Stadium. Excited about that, excited about that opponent, and we’ll have more information coming with the rest of our schedule,” Conque said. “Obviously, we’ll play a full Southland Conference schedule that first year giving us eight conference games — four at home, four on the road — so we’re getting close. It’s hard to believe we’re 420 or so days away.”

“They came up to Division II and they’ve got a good program. They’re a good quality opponent,” Bush said. “There’s a lot of Sul Ross alumni down here, a lot of coaches down here, so I think it’ll be a good game with a good fan base for them and a good opener for us.”

UTRGV Football will play its first game in program history at home against Sul Ross State on Aug. 30, 2025 at Robert and Janet Vackar Stadium in Edinburg, according to a report from FBSchedules.com.

A copy of a contract between UTRGV and Sul Ross State was obtained from UTRGV via a Texas Public Information Act request, according to the report, which states the Vaqueros will pay the Lobos a $50,000 guarantee for the game. UTRGV Athletics had no comment.

UIL approves split divisions in postseason for multiple sports

Rumors swirled across the coaching landscape about the possible change in the postseason over the past few months, with many expecting it to come prior to the start of this season.

The University Interscholastic League Legislative Council took the next step towards making the change a reality, passing an amendment for split divisions in the postseason for baseball, basketball, soccer, softball and volleyball during a meeting Tuesday.

The change to the playoff structure follows a format currently used by the UIL in 6A football. The format advances the top four finishers in each district to the postseason, with the two qualifying schools with the highest enrollment competing in the Division I bracket and the two schools with smaller enrollment going to the Division II bracket.

The change will apply to Class 2A-6A in baseball, softball and volleyball, 4A-6A in soccer and 1-6A in basketball.

No changes in districts are expected to be made, with each team still set to compete in the assigned conferences from this year’s realignment.

The amendment is set to take effect on Aug. 1 if approved by the Commission of Education.

UTRGV WR coach Brasfield to work with Minnesota Vikings

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros football team announced on Thursday that wide receivers and player development coach Chris Brasfield will work with the Minnesota Vikings coaching staff during training camp from July 20 through Aug. 4 in Eagan, Minn., as part of the NFL Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship.

This is the fourth time Brasfield has been selected for the NFL Bill Walsh Diversity Coach Fellowship, after previously taking part with the Buffalo Bills in 2012, Tennessee Titans in 2009, and Oakland Raiders in 2000.

“I’m excited to have been selected by the Minnesota Vikings for the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship,” Brasfield said. “The Vikings organization has earned the reputation of operating with high standards and values. From the ownership to the front office, coaches and staff members, there is a winning culture being established. I look forward to being a part of that environment through this internship. I hope to bring back some knowledge that offers some additional tools to the players I’ll be coaching at UTRGV.”

This is the second-straight year in which a UTRGV coach is participating in the NFL Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship program, as pass game coordinator/safeties coach/recruiting coordinator Adrian McDonald worked with the Atlanta Falcons during training camp last year. Additionally, running backs coach/recruiting coordinator Marco Regalado participated in the program with the Jacksonville Jaguars last year.

“I’m excited for Coach Brasfield to get this opportunity and glad the calendars aligned,” UTRGV head coach Travis Bush said. “This internship will benefit our program the same as last year when Coaches Regalado and McDonald had the opportunity. To be around and work at the highest level of training, and to be able to bring ideas and techniques back that will help our young men is invaluable.”

For more than 30 years, the NFL Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship has helped outstanding coaches gain exposure to NFL training camps and offseason workout programs.

The program’s objective is to use NFL clubs’ training camps, offseason workout programs and minicamps to give talented coaches opportunities to observe, participate, and gain experience.

Brasfield has nearly 20 years of coaching experience and additional high level recruiting experience.

Brasfield previously served in roles including running backs coach, assistant head coach and special teams coordinator, and senior analyst and special assistant to the head coach at SMU (2018-20), associate athletics director of student-athlete recruitment & experience (2015-17) and director of high school relations for football (2014) at Nebraska, running backs coach at Oregon State (2011-13), defensive graduate assistant at Oregon (2010), running backs coach at Samford (2007-09), Chicago Hope Academy head coach (2005-06), Fort Worth County Day School head coach (2002-04), offensive graduate assistant at TCU (spring 2001), assistant coach at All Saints Episcopal School (2000), assistant wide receivers coach at Texas State (1999), and wide receivers coach at Midwestern State (1996).

Bears, Raiders nab 7-on-7 state tournament bids

MISSION — With the 2023-24 UIL academic calendar in the books, 7-on-7 football is set to take center stage across the RGV.

Three state qualifying tournaments are set to take place across the Valley over the next three weeks, with the Snake Pit Classic kicking things off today.

Three spots were on the line during this year’s Snake Pit Classic, with games being played at Mission Veterans, Sharyland High and Sharyland Pioneer.

The winner from each location secured a spot at the Texas Football 7-on-7 tournament set for June 27-29 at Veterans Park and Athletic Complex in College Station.

Here’s a look at how the qualifying action played out at each location.

BRACKET A

PSJA High senior quarterback Myles Lopez hit senior wideout Ryan Vallejo in the back of the end zone as time expired for the go-ahead score as the Bears downed the Mission Veterans Patriots 28-25 during the state qualifying game at Mission Veterans High School.

The win advances PSJA High to College Station for the second straight year, while also marking their second overall appearance.

PSJA High flexed its muscle throughout the day, picking up wins over Edcouch-Elsa (28-12), Weslaco High (12-6) and Mission High (20-18) en route to a 3-0 mark during pool play.

In the state qualifying game, Lopez and Vallejo demonstrated their budding chemistry, with Lopez rolling out before placing the ball where only Vallejo could get it for the win.

The Bears are now set to compete in the Division I bracket at the state tournament in two weeks.

BRACKET B

The day belonged to the Laredo United Longhorns during qualifying play at Sharyland Pioneer High School, going 4-0 against the competition en route to a state tournament berth.

The Longhorns high octane offense was on full display during the day, pouring on 20 or more points against three of their four opponents.

Lockdown defense also played a part during the Longhorns win, not allowing more than one score during each of their games.

Laredo United went perfect during pool play with wins over Weslaco East (14-6), Edinburg North (28-7) and Edinburg Vela (25-6), before earning their state berth with a win over McAllen Rowe (26-6) in the qualifying round.

BRACKET C

PSJA North picked off Harlingen High two times, including a pick-6 en route to a 20-6 win over the Cardinals during the state qualifying game at Sharyland High.

The win advances the Raiders to the state tournament for a third straight year, also marking their third overall trip to College Station.

Despite a new face under center after the graduation of UTRGV signee Ale Aparicio, the Raiders thrived during pool play, going 3-0 with wins over Laredo United South (25-21), La Joya Palmview (26-12) and Mercedes (32-21).

In the championship game, the Raiders vaunted Black Shirt Defense took centerstage, locking down the Cardinals during the win.

Like the Bears, the Raiders will compete in the Division I bracket at the state tournament in three weeks.
