HARLINGEN — The Harlingen High Cardinals flexed their offensive muscle against the Sharyland Pioneer Diamondbacks on Friday evening at Boggus Stadium.

From start to finish, Harlingen High scored on offense and defense as they cruised past Sharyland 64-17.

“We coached those things,” Gomez said. “There are certain things that we see on film, and that is part of (the game), too. We scheme to their weaknesses and we scheme to their strengths, and those were certain instances that we had seen on film, and we just took advantage of it and we executed perfectly.

“We talk about effort every single day, but we also added the execution piece today and it was imperative that we combine both tonight. I though our effort was tremendous but our execution started a little rusty. We adjusted defensively and we got some things accomplished. I’m really proud of this group.”

The execution of which Gomez spoke produced from the get-go as quarterback Jaime Galvan found Joe Reyna for a 70-yard touchdown pass as the Cardinals jumped out to an early 8-0 lead.

Unshaken by the big play, the Diamondbacks responded with a touchdown of their own as Eddie Lee Marburger hit Luke Padilla for a 25-yard pass to cut the lead 8-7.

However, that was as close as Pioneer got, as Harlingen High rattled off 21 unanswered points to take a 29-7 lead during the second quarter.

The Cardinals took a 36-15 lead at the half.

Toward the end of the contest, the effort of which Gomez spoke after the game produced a score, as Harlingen High defensive lineman Angel Garcia hauled in an interception and went 40 yards for the touchdown.
