HARLINGEN — After 10 events, the Harlingen High boys track team was second in the standings as Harlingen South nursed a nine-point lead after scoring big points in the field events to start the day.
By meet’s end, it was the Cardinals who stood tall, claiming gold in four of the final seven events, including the 1,600-meter relay to secure a victory at the 2019 Harlingen Relays on Saturday morning at Boggus Stadium.
The Cardinals topped the standings with 154 points, followed by Edinburg Vela (130) in second, Weslaco High and Harlingen South third (113) and Santa Rosa (30) fifth.
“ We were really looking forward to our running events,” Harlingen High coach Efrain Ambriz said. “We really threw down some impressive times, at least for early in the season. We had guys like Jose Garcia, who won four medals today; he’s a tremendous kid and I can’t say enough about him. I’m also happy for our quarter-miler, Cole Swinnea, who also won gold today. We also finished strong there at the end with a very impressive mile relay for early in the season, so I’m really, really happy with what’s going on right now.”
Garcia won gold in the 100-meter dash (11.12 seconds), the 200 (22.68), the long jump (22 feet, 8.5 inches) and was on the winning 400 relay team. Swinnea won the 400 (50.72) and was the final leg of the mile relay team.
On the girls side of things, Edcouch Elsa was victorious, scoring 96 points.
Lady ’Jackets coach Juan Aguinaga was confident his team had a good meet as he and his athletes packed up and made their exit, though they had to run back into the stadium after hearing the final results.
“ I was expecting a top-three finish, but I didn’t think we were going to take the whole thing,” the E-E coach said. “We were halfway out to the bus and I was saying we probably placed in the top three because we didn’t really place in the hurdles or the 200 and stuff. I tell the girls that if it happens, it happens. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t; we take it as a practice every meet.”
The Lady ’Jackets racked up early points in the field events, led by thrower Mackenzie Contreras and Bianca Cardenas. Contreras took gold in the shot put (39 feet, 5 inches) and discus (118-03.5), and Cardenas claimed victory in the pole vault (12-03).
The Hanna girls had a solid day with 84 points and a second-place finish.
The Lady Golden Eagles gained ground on the Lady ’Jackets in the track events with gold medals in the 400 and 800 relays, as well as wins from Jacqueline Mora in the 100 dash (12.87) and Aniel Aguero in the 400 (59.90).
Rounding out the top five were San Benito (80), Edinburg Vela (79) and Harlingen High (66).
OTHER NOTABLES
Rivera’s Andrea de la Rosa once again showed why she is one of the top distance runners in the Rio Grande Valley, winning gold in the 3,200 (11:56.75) and 1,600 (5:22.43).
The wins are the fourth and fifth of the 2019 season for the Lady Raiders’ athletes.
Harlingen High’s Jaiden Barbour took home a gold medal and a couple of silvers. She won the long jump (155-8.50) and took second in the 100 (13.24) and 200 (27.78).
In the boys field events, the Harlingen South throwers had a huge day as three athletes finished in the top five of the discus and shot put.
In the shot put, Andrew Ott took home gold with a throw of 56-9, followed by Chase Harrell (54-7) in second and Benjamin Ruiz (47-8.50) in fifth.
In the discus, Cristian Cortez’s 175-1 was enough to give him the gold, followed by Harrell (167-2.50) in second and Ruiz (149) in fifth.
