Cameron County tennis teams moving on to area

With the tennis bi-district playoffs come and gone, the District 32-6A representatives must feel pretty good about themselves heading into the Class 6A area round.

Three of the four playoff teams from the district will move on to area after Harlingen South, Los Fresnos and Harlingen High all picked up decisive wins earlier this week.
Harlingen South dominated Weslaco High 19-0 Monday and now will face Eagle Pass in Roma on Friday afternoon.

South head coach Noe Stillman said after cruising in bi-district, he expects his squad to come out ready as they prepare for what’s ahead should they get by Eagle Pass.

“We basically took care of business … now we move on to Eagle Pass,” Stillman said. “For us, it’s about coming out and focusing, the kids have done a good job without mental lapses. We’ve been doing that and continue to do that. We haven’t had tough matches since we were up in the Houston area and San Antonio (earlier) this season. We’re trying to prepare for the (regional semifinals) where we are going to play someone that is pretty good. I’m looking for good effort and good level of play.”

Los Fresnos made quick work of Edinburg High in a 16-0 win Monday and now will face Laredo Alexander on Friday morning in Laredo.

Head coach Bill Sandlin, who has guided Los Fresnos to the postseason, for the second season in a row, is expecting a tough out from the District 29-6A champions.

“That’s a pretty tough district up there and they have close proximity to San Antonio,” Sandlin said. “They have some very good players. Last year we ended up losing to Del Rio, who was the fourth place team. They had strong players. I’m looking for our kids to compete well. Hopefully we have a chance in some of the lower matches and my some of my top players have some good chances. I’m looking forward to it and I know the kids are excited, too.”

Harlingen High took down Edinburg North on Tuesday and will face McAllen Memorial on Saturday morning.

Hanna was the odd team out from 32-6A, falling to Edinburg Vela 10-9 after rallying from a three-match deficit and losing the deciding match in a third-set tie breaker.

Five other Cameron County tennis teams were in action this week with two of them moving on.

District 32-4A runner-up Port Isabel defeated H.M. King 10-4 Tuesday and will face Devine today at the HEB Tennis Center in Corpus Christi.

Raymondville just got past Beeville Jones, prevailing 10-9.

The Bearkats now will face District 30-4A winner La Vernia, which is coming off a first-round bye.

District 32-4A fourth-place team La Feria fell to Rockport-Fulton 10-7.

In District 32-5A, Brownsville Veterans and Porter were in action this week.

Porter fell 10-0 to Sharyland Pioneer on Monday and Brownsville Veterans lost to Roma 10-1 on Tuesday.
