MERCEDES — Mercedes Lady Tigers pitcher Zelinda Camacho struck out 11 Brownsville Veterans Memorial Lady Chargers batters to help her team pick up a 5-0 District 32-5A win Tuesday night.
“The girls came out tonight and fought,” Mercedes coach Kristy Leal said. “That is something I told them they needed to do all season long. Once they look the part, they are going to play the part.”
Brownsville Veterans’ Alexis Tamez also had a solid outing in the circle, but it was the Lady Tigers who figured out Tamez first.
Adamari Perales scored for Mercedes in the bottom of the fourth after an attempt to throw her out at second was overthrown.
Perales and Ashley De Leon provided cushion for the Lady Tigers in the bottom of the sixth inning courtesy of Mishale De La Torre’s bases-clearing double. Camacho then roped a double to left field to bring in De La Torre.
Rhianna Sierra’s double brought in Camacho to give Mercedes a 5-0 lead.
“Two good pitchers out there,” Brownsville Veterans coach Heriberto Rodriguez said. “We bobbled a couple of balls in the sixth, and they are good hitters. We cannot give a good team any chances. They had a great pitcher out there.”
