Bulldogs make history with win over San Diego

“It was the best bath I’ve had. It was cold, but it felt better that anything I’ve ever had,” said Gonzalez after his Lyford Bulldogs overpowered the San Diego Vaqueros on their way to a 38-16 victory.

With the win, the Bulldogs finished the regular season at 7-3, 5-0, becoming the first team in program history to win back-to-back district titles.

“Without Jesus Christ none of this would be possible,” said Gonzalez. “We’re a faith-based football program and our kids came out and played extremely well.

“It means a lot to me, but it means a lot to the community and these kids to be the first Bulldog team to win back-to-back district champions, and for me to be able to be part of that is something extremely special.”

The Bulldogs used the thunder and lighting duo of Frank Moreno and Javier Gonzalez to pound the football throughout the game. The pair combined for 323 yards and five touchdowns on the night.

Moreno scored touchdowns from 1, 3, 44 and 30 yards out as the senior rushed for 216 yards on 19 carries. Gonzalez also had a big night rushing for 107 yards and one TD on 17 carries.

“I’m a firm believer that those guys are like thunder and lighting,” said Gonzalez. “They’re the best one-two punch in the state of Texas in 3A football. That offensive line and Chase Hinojosa and Layne Klostermann are also leaders.

“This is a selfless group of seniors that understand that only one person can get the ball but 10 guys have got to block.”

Lyford had 462 yards of total offensive. Senior quarterback Hinojosa finished the night with 100 yards passing on 8 of 12 attempts.
