Brownsville Veterans advances to area round

STAFF REPORTS

The Brownsville Veterans Memorial Lady Chargers completed their best-of-three series against the Weslaco High Lady Panthers on Saturday in Weslaco.

After having won the first game of the series Thursday in Brownsville, the Lady Chargers needed to win just one of its double-header games Saturday. They dropped the first game 10-0 in five innings, forcing a decisive tiebreaker.

Brownsville Veterans rebounded to earn a 10-2 victory over the Lady Panthers to win the opening-round matchup.

“It was a total team effort in the second game,” Brownsville Veterans coach Ray Cardenas said. “Everyone contributed. The middle and bottom of our order got on base, and the top drove them in. We were down 2-1 until the fourth inning and got our bats going.”

Cardenasalso contributed some of the turnaround between games to his team’s patience at the plate because Weslaco High’s pitcher pitched back-to-back complete games.

“We were making sure we took pitches,” Cardenas said.

Brownsville Veterans’ Cassie Valdez pitched seven innings and allowed two runs on five hits and one walk and issued five strikeouts.

Rheanna Gomez, Lydia Fernandez, Sarah Sandoval and Kiwi Silva each scored two runs for the Lady Chargers. Sandoval also added three hits and four RBIs.

The Lady Chargers will be the Metro-area’s sole representative in the area round of the playoffs. They will take on Laredo LBJ in a one-game playoff at a time and date that has yet to be determined.
