Bloodhounds bounce back after tournament losses

SAN ANTONIO — The St. Joseph Academy soccer team bounced back from last weekend’s disappointing tournament finish by winning a TAPPS district game 6-0 on Saturday at San Antonio St. Anthony’s.

The Bloodhounds, now 10-2-1 overall and 4-0 in their TAPPS district, reached the championship semifinals in one bracket of the 34th annual Brownsville ISD Tournament last weekend at Brownsville Sports Park before suffering losses to McAllen High (5-0) and Edinburg North (4-2).

“I thought we kind of were dragging a little slump from our last two tournament games into this game (in San Antonio),” SJA coach Tino Villarreal said. “We were leading only 1-0 at halftime after having lots of shots go wide in the first half. Then we scored five goals in the second half, so it was like a wakeup call for us that got us going again (like we would like to play). I thought we finished well in this game.”

A first-half goal by Gerardo Moses gave the Bloodhounds a 1-0 advantage at intermission Saturday. Once the second half started, the Bloodhounds added two more goals by Moses, one by Jose Kauachi and two by Miguel Guerra.

The Bloodhounds, who advanced to the TAPPS state semifinals last season, lead their TAPPS district.

They return to non-district action at 6 p.m. Monday against IDEA Frontier at Canales Field. SJA then will be playing at the Progreso Tournament beginning Friday.
