Bearkats top Lyford 21-12 in annual Cotton Bowl

Raymondville came out firing on all cylinders after the half to beat county rivals Lyford 21-12, making it three consecutive times the Bearkats have come out on top.

With 6:28 left in the second quarter, Lyford’s Jaedon Taylor marked his return to Valley high school football by scoring the opening touchdown to give the Bulldogs a 6-0 lead that held into halftime.

Taylor’s return comes after a lengthy saga that saw the standout running back transfer from Harlingen South to Harlingen, Tennessee, and finally landing in Lyford.

The Bearkats’ offense came alive after halftime as Trevino capped off a six-play scoring drive that began at their own 23. The touchdown gave Raymondville a 7-6 advantage after Lyford kicker, Michael Marroquin, missed the extra point attempt earlier.

On the Bearkats’ next position Trevino outran the Bulldogs defense on a quarterback keeper for a 19-yard touchdown that extended the lead to 14-6.

Feeling the momentum shift, the Bulldogs put together a seven-play scoring drive that was capped off by 4-yard touchdown reception by Luis Martinez.

The Bulldogs opted for a 2-point conversion to tie game but junior quarterback John Rivera was intercepted on the attempt, making the score 14-12.

Rivera threw for 114 yards on 22 attempts but also had three crucial interceptions. Meanwhile, teammate Taylor had 65 yards rushing on just as many carries.

The Bearkats’ final touchdown of the game came with 9:15 left in the contest, just before the rain began to pour.
