Bearkats ready for Bramahs in Week 5

RAYMONDVILLE — Raymondville head coach Frank Cantu’s message to the team this week was simple “lets keep the focus, concentrate on what we are doing and not take anything for granted.”

A message the Bearkats have heard all season, and considering the Bearkats are currently 3-1 heading into their Week 5 matchup against Kingsville King, the team’s “take one game at a time” philosophy seems to be working just fine.

The Brahmas come into the matchup with a 2-2 record, defeating Ingleside 14-12 and Robstown 41-0. However, beyond the team’s two recent victories, Kingsville King lost its first two to Tuloso-Midway (7-3) Alice (39-7).

“They just came off of a big win against Robstown last week and we have always had some tough hard-nosed ball games against them and we expect another close ball game Friday,” said Cantu.

Defensively, the Bearkats will be up to the task against the Brahmas. This season the Bearkats defense has resembled last years stingy defense, allowing an average of 173 yards per game.

“We’re doing very well so far and we are very excited,” said Cantu. “We had a very good defensive squad last year and we lost some kids but we have some kids that have stepped up and really done well. We are really excited about the way we have been playing and we just want to keep that intensity up, keep fight hard, and make them work hard for every yard they get.”

Offensively, Kingsville comes into the game amassing a total of 941 yards, with 533 yards rushing and 388 yards passing.

For the Bearkats, moving the ball has not been an issue as the team has impressively racked up more than 1,600 yards. After being one of the team’s leaders on defense last season, Jacob Posas has grown into the quarterback position this year and produced big for the Bearkats. This season Posas has passed for 444 yards and four touchdowns while rushing for another 468 yards and seven touchdowns.
