Baseball Roundup: Weslaco East tops Brownsville Veterans

WESLACO — The Weslaco East Wildcats kept their unbeaten record in District 32-5A intact with a 6-2 victory over the Brownsville Veterans Memorial Chargers on Tuesday at Weslaco East High School.

The Wildcats, the No. 9 team in Class 5A according to the latest Diamond Pro/Texas High School Baseball top 25, improved to 13-2 overall and 5-0 in district play with the win. The Chargers dropped to 11-4 overall and 4-1 in district.

Weslaco East pitcher Alex Solis delivered a dominant outing, allowing one hit, three walks and no earned runs while striking out 12 in 6 2/3 innings. He also finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a walk.

East’s Jose Rodriguez added two RBIs on 1-for-3 hitting, and Joseph Perez drove in one with a 1-for-2 day at the plate with one walk.

The Wildcats and Chargers will play Game 2 of their District 32-5A series at 7 p.m. Thursday at Brownsville Veterans High School.

DISTRICT 30-5A

LA JOYA PALMVIEW 12, RIO GRANDE CITY 3: At Rio Grande City, 30-5A competition started Tuesday night, and the defending district champion Lobos won in a big way.

Palmview starter Herminio Gonzalez held the Rattlers to one earned run in six innings of work, finishing with three hits, three walks and three strikeouts. Ezie Puente, Renzo Tamez and Tony Villarreal all recorded two RBIs apiece for Palmview.

Palmview and Rio Grande City will play Game 2 of their series at 2 p.m. Thursday at La Joya Palmview High School in Mission.

MISSION VETERANS 5, LA JOYA JUAREZ-LINCOLN 4: At La Joya, the Huskies rallied with a four-run sixth inning to send the game into the seventh tied at 4. That’s when Mission Veterans’ Ethan Garza singled to score Quincy Handy in the top of the seventh for what turned out to be the game winning run.

Game 2 between the Patriots and Huskies is slated for a noon start Thursday at Mission Veterans High School.

ROMA 12, LAREDO CIGARROA 2: At Roma, the Gladiators took care of business in six innings against the Toros to start 1-0 in league play.

The Gladiators and Toros are scheduled to play Game 2 at 5 p.m. Thursday in Laredo.
