Baseball Notebook: RGV sweeps 30-5A playoff spots, McHi & Pioneer chase district title

With Mission Veterans mowing down Laredo Cigarroa 14-1 on Friday, it secured all four of District 30-5A’s playoff spots with the four RGV teams within the district.

The Patriots (7-11, 4-6) are back in the postseason for the first time since 2016-17. Mission Veterans will be the fourth seed from 30-5A after winning two of three to close out the regular season.

Rio Grande City (14-3, 10-0) completed its perfect run through the district with a 13-0 win in five innings over Laredo Martin on Friday.

UTRGV commit Mike Ramos (6-0) threw a no-hitter while striking out eight batters in five innings of work. Marc Perez led the Rattlers at the plate, going 2-for-3, with four RBIs and one run.

La Joya Palmview (13-2, 8-2) is locked into the No. 2 seed and set to enter the postseason with back-to-back shutouts.

The Lobos defeated Roma 8-0 on the back of a no-hitter by the combination of Bobby Cantu and Herminio Gonzalez on Friday, and a two-hitter by sophomore Ezie Puente in a 2-0 win over Laredo Martin on Tuesday.

The Gladiators, who are also back in the playoffs for the first time since 2016-17, went .500 in district competition to earn 30-5A’s No. 3 seed.

McHI, PIONEER NEAR DISTRICT TITLE

The District 31-5A championship race is down to two teams — McAllen High (21-4, 10-1) and Sharyland Pioneer (24-2, 10-1).

After splitting their season series 1-1, both the Bulldogs and Diamondbacks share a 10-1 district record entering the final week of 31-5A action, which includes three games for each team.

McHi must get through home games against PSJA Southwest and Sharyland High on Tuesday and Friday, respectively, with the regular-season finale set for Saturday on the road against Valley View.

Meanwhile, Sharyland Pioneer has road games versus Sharyland High and PSJA Memorial set for Tuesday and Friday. The Diamondbacks will close out district play at home against McAllen Memorial on Saturday.

BOBCATS, RAIDERS CHASE FOURTH SEED

District 31-6A champion La Joya High is sitting pretty in the No. 1 overall seed at 15-0, while Edinburg Vela and PSJA High are guaranteed either the No. 2 or No. 3 seed pending Tuesday’s results.

But the fight for the fourth and final playoff spot is setting up to be a battle between the Edinburg High Bobcats and PSJA North Raiders on Tuesday.

The Bobcats (9-6, 9-6) can clinch a playoff berth with a victory against PSJA High on Tuesday, but they’ll be underdogs in that matchup. PSJA North is facing a must-win game against Mission High on Tuesday. A PSJA North win combined with an Edinburg loss creates a tie for the No. 4 seed, forcing the two into a potential play-in game.
