Baseball area round matchups set

Three East Valley schools are still alive in the UIL baseball playoffs, two in Class 6A and one in Class 3A.

District 32-6A runner-up Harlingen High, which defeated Edinburg High 2-1 in a best-of-three bi-district series, is set to play Laredo United South in a best-of-three series beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday at Laredo Unitrade Stadium.

Games 2 and 3 are scheduled for Saturday in Harlingen, with Game 2 slated for 3 p.m., and Game 3 slated for 30 minutes after the conclusion of Game 2, if necessary.

The District 29-6A champion Panthers (25-8-1, 10-2 29-6A) went down to the wire in their best-of-three bi-district series with La Joya High, winning the first game 3-1, dropping the second game 3-2 and emerging victorious in the decisive third game, 11-5.

The Cardinals (19-16, 10-5 32-6A) met Laredo United South on March 1 at Mira’s Tournament in Corpus Christi and lost 7-3.

The third-place finisher in 32-6A, Los Fresnos defeated Weslaco High 3-1 in the bi-district round behind a no-hitter from sophomore left-hander Victor Loa.

The Falcons (22-10, 10-5 32-6A) will take on Laredo United in the area round. The Longhorns (18-14-1, 7-5 29-6A) dispatched PSJA High 6-5 in the final game of a best-of-three series in Roma. Los Fresnos will battle Laredo United in a one-game playoff at 7 p.m. Friday at PSJA High.

District 32-3A champion Lyford topped Falfurrias 4-3 in the bi-district round to set up an area-round matchup with Odem in a one-game playoff at 7 p.m. Friday in Hebbronville.

The Bulldogs (18-3, 9-0 32-3A), winners of 12 straight games since March 18, will face the District 29-3A runner-up Owls (22-3, 10-2 29-3A). Odem swept Cotulla in the bi-district round, winning 6-0 and 3-0 in their best-of-three series.
