Lady Falcons edge Lady Cardinals in penalty kicks

By STEFAN MODRICH, Staff Writer

LOS FRESNOS — Entering Friday night’s game against Harlingen High, Los Fresnos girls soccer coach Diego Luna had been anticipating an opportunity to improve his team’s performance in penalty kicks.

That extra practice paid off after two overtime periods wasn’t enough to settle things between the Lady Cardinals and Lady Falcons.

Los Fresnos prevailed 3-2 (3-1 in PKs) thanks to goalkeeper Andrea Calvillo’s resolve and clutch goals by Ashley Esparza, Yulianna Moreno and Brianna Gracia in the shootout.

“That has been our weakness,” Luna said. “(Calvillo) did an excellent job. She was very confident. Before she went out to the goal, you could tell in her eyes that she was ready.”

Only Kay-Lani Vasquez, who had the lone Harlingen High goal in regulation, scored during the shootout for the Lady Cardinals.

“Our shifting (on defense), didn’t go right,” Harlingen High girls soccer coach Debra Galvan “We made a mistake, and they capitalized on it.”

The Lady Falcons struck first in the first half on a header by Alondra Lopez off of a corner kick.

Vasquez had the first equalizer with seven minutes remaining in the first half.

Both teams had several scoring chances during a tense second half but went to overtime tied at one goal apiece.

At the 7:44 mark of the first overtime, Monique Rodriguez scored the go-ahead goal from 25 yards out, launching the ball into the top left corner of the goal to give the visitors a 2-1 lead.

“As soon as that goal went in, I could tell it wasn’t shaking them,” Luna said. “We has talked at halftime about overcoming challenges and playing to expectation.”

With 5:44 remaining in the second overtime, JC Gaznares found a lane and struck from 15 yards out, booting the ball past Harlingen High keeper Erianah Zapata to even the game at 2.

“JC is fast, and it’s going to be difficult for a defender to beat her with her speed,” Luna said.

Calvillo stopped the first penalty kick she saw from Alexa Gonzalez, and Lauren Powell’s penalty shot sailed above the crossbar.

After Gracia found the back of the net, Calvillo saved Grace Alcocer’s penalty kick to seal the victory.

Falcons outlast Cardinals in overtime

LOS FRESNOS — If one thing was made clear over the course of several hours Friday night at Leo Aguilar Memorial Stadium, it was that no lead is safe for long.

Los Fresnos hung on for a pivotal 3-2 overtime win over Harlingen High after the visitors rallied twice from behind to force the two District 32-6A rivals to battle beyond 80 minutes of regulation time.

“In the first half we just squandered some chances,” Los Fresnos boys coach Michael Miller said. “They got a goal on us, we responded and they came back.”

Dante Esqueda put the Falcons (3-0 32-6A) on the board first, and Los Fresnos led 1-0 at the end of the first half. Esqueda also scored for the Falcons during their win over Brownsville Rivera on Tuesday, coming off of the bench to do so on both occasions.

At the 32-minute mark, Harlingen High broke through with a goal from Luis Garcia to even the game at 1.

With 18 minutes left in regulation, Tito Trinadad answered to regain the lead for the Falcons.

Seven minutes later, the Cardinals dug deep for another equalizer, this time from Jacob Garza.

“(Los Fresnos) is a great team,” Harlingen High boys coach Johnny Guillen said. “Coming into this game, they hadn’t lost (in district play). We had a great game plan (going into the game), and they got a goal late in the game. We weren’t able to finish. They were able to finish tonight.”

With 2:38 to play in the second overtime period, Angel Mancillas delivered a cross to Obed Sepulveda, who netted the game-winner from the back post for Los Fresnos.

“In overtime, we pushed and pushed,” Miller said. “We told the boys the last 10 minutes that we want to take care of this right now, and we want the three points. The boys got the three points and we’re in first place, so it’s a good feeling to have. Having to fight for it like we had to fight for it, it’s a good learning experience for the boys.”

Miller said he was proud of the way his team has battled through its district schedule and embraced his leadership, beginning last summer.

“They came and they accepted me right away,” Miller said. “(And I’m proud of) the drive they show and the willingness to get better. You win three straight district games and go into Rivera and win, that’s something this program doesn’t do often. I’m real proud of them getting these three district wins and putting themselves in a good position to challenge for district.”

Falcons set to host district wrestling meet

By STEFAN MODRICH, Staff Writer

LOS FRESNOS — Los Fresnos appears to be peaking at exactly the right time, as the District 16-6A meet hosts roll into today’s competition at the Los Fresnos United dome on a hot streak.

Matches are slated to begin at 7 a.m.

The Falcons won the Gator Roll Duals on Jan. 11 at Grulla and finished second in the Sharyland Grapefruit Invitational on Jan. 18.

“They’ve all put in the work, they’ve all done well,” Los Fresnos coach Kevin Nguyen said. “It’s been a learning experience every tournament and every match they go through.”

Wrestlers to watch for today include seniors Roman Rodriguez at 120 pounds, Fabian Sosa at 126, Edgar Sauceda at 132, Kevin Ponce at 138 and Leeroy Guerrero checking in at 220 pounds.

Rodriguez and Sosa are among the team’s most vocal leaders, and spar most often due to their similar builds. They emphasized that they feel more ready for district than they were at this time last year, a byproduct of the experience and time spent conditioning in the offseason. Each dropped six pounds to move down one weight class from where they began competing at the beginning of the season.

“Definitely, this time around we are better prepared about knowing how to cut weight,” Sosa said.

For Rodriguez and Guerrero, the biggest difference was maturity, and the ability to read and react to moves in real time based on studying opponents’ moves and learning how to counter them.

“You do that in practice, and the outcome (improves) in the match,” Rodriguez said.

Guerrero also made a significant push to drop down from his football playing weight of 285 pounds.

In a sport where some of the hardest sacrifices are the result of mental and dietary discipline, and extra workouts that can take place in solitude, camaraderie in practice becomes all the more important.

“We encourage each other, we work together,” Rodriguez said. “We lift each other up, pick each other up whenever we fall down. … A lot of us have matured more and grown more and gotten comfortable with each other, and we’ve executed well in the matches.”

The culture of accountability and a sense of shared pride in one another is something Nguyen has helped instill in his athletes during his third season leading the Falcons.

“As a team, they’re like a family: one kid wins and it pumps the next kid up,” Nguyen said. “They have almost a friendly rivalry against each other. … You’re going to work every day to make sure they get better and you get better.”

Lady Falcons’ Reyes signs with St. Mary’s

By STEFAN MODRICH, Staff Writer

LOS FRESNOS — With the entire Los Fresnos baseball and softball programs, and dozens of others gathered to cheer her on, Reba Reyes felt right at home.

Only, instead of stepping up to the plate, digging into the infield dirt at shortstop or trotting out to the warning track in center field, she was seated with her family Wednesday in the Los Fresnos gymnasium as she signed her intent to play softball for St. Mary’s University, a private Catholic school in San Antonio.

The Rattlers compete at the Division II level within the National Collegiate Athletic Association and the Lone Star Conference.

At St. Mary’s, Reyes will major in exercise and sports science, and the senior said she was excited about the prospect of starting a new life in San Antonio.

“My parents put so much into me,” Reyes said. “All I wanted to do was just get my college paid for them for all this time they’ve put into me, and so much money and everything.”

Reyes’ parents and coaches praised her work ethic, and her desire for continuous improvement has been inspired by her peers.

“I’ve had a lot of people tell me to only look at people who are better than you as a challenge,” Reyes. “Like, don’t be scared of them. Those girls have pushed me to do that, and coaches have always told me I’m capable of putting so much more than I put in, so I just put in more work.”

Reyes said she has been told she’ll continue to play shortstop at St. Mary’s, and she is going to use her final season to fine-tune her game and work toward preparing herself for the next phase of her career.

“Ever since Day 1 when she showed up here, she has been growing in her physical game and mental game,” Los Fresnos softball coach Traci Blackman said. “She’s been amazing. Every year she seems to get better.”

Pace’s Recio signs with Texas A&M-Kingsville

By STEFAN MODRICH, Staff Writer

BROWNSVILLE – Standing 6-foot-4 and weighing 305 pounds, Pace Vikings lineman Rafael Recio gained a reputation as one of the most imposing offensive tackles in the Rio Grande Valley.

The senior became the latest East Valley lineman to sign with Texas A&M University Kingsville on Wednesday, and he did so to a raucous reception in a packed auditorium that featured the Pace cheerleaders and drumline.

Recio was the key to unlocking a dynamic Vikings running game that averaged 200 yards per game on the ground and featured Dylan Barron, Matthew Cuellar and dual-threat quarterback Jose Banda.

During Pace’s bi-district playoff game against Corpus Christi Miller — a narrow 28-21 loss — Recio was noticed by Javelinas offensive line coach Keith Wagner.

“The (recruiting) process was really unbelievable for me,” Recio said. “Coach Wagner saw me play in my last playoff game, and in my opinion I had a great game that game. I was already of the mindset that this game determines whether I go to college or not. So I played hard.”

Recio will study kinesiology at TAMUK and join a 2020 signing class that includes Weslaco High quarterback Jacob Cavazos, as well as players from Edinburg, Pharr and McAllen. The Javelinas’ 2019 roster featured five players from the Valley.

As Recio’s potential began to grow as a prospect, his parents became more invested in his success, and several Pace coaches and administrators touted Recio as an example of what believing in oneself could result in, both in terms of academic and athletic success.

Along the way, Recio has received plenty of advice from those authority figures.

“Most of us just talked about what’s coming his way,” Vikings coach Danny Pardo said. “(The players) know football, they know what’s coming. It’s the other stuff that nobody talks about. (He’s) going to get homesick. … (He’s) going have to stick it out because (Recio) will open the door for other kids from the Valley.”

Pardo said TAMUK coach Mike Salinas is taking advantage of the pipeline of talent in close proximity to campus, which Salinas knows well as the former coach of Edinburg Vela.

The Vikings’ coach added that Recio’s size may translate better to being an offensive guard at the college level, but regardless of his position, Recio appreciated the chance to stay close to home and join a program that he feels he will be able to make an impact with right away.

“To me, it was like God’s plan, because Kingsville is an hour and a half away,” Recio said. “Everything is just so close, and I have a good relationship with all the coaches. So now it’s time to just see what will come in the future.”

Falcons’ Valencia signs with Columbia

By STEFAN MODRICH, Staff Writer

LOS FRESNOS — Nico Valencia comes from a family that doesn’t make small plans.

His older brother, Kike, is a freshman at Yale, where he is a mechanical engineering major on a full scholarship. And now Nico is going to uphold his family’s Ivy League tradition, which he formalized Wednesday by signing his letter of intent to play football for Columbia University in New York.

“My brother and I, we always wanted to go to the best school possible,” Valencia said. “I guess my brother being the first one to do that, it made it more tangible to me and to show myself and people at my school that is possible (to excel in higher education) if you work hard at it.”

After dominating gridirons across the Rio Grande Valley, Valencia is now headed for the concrete jungles of the Big Apple, where he plans to study financial economics and pursue a career in consulting or investment banking.

“There were a lot of great schools, and really there was no wrong choice,” Valencia said. “It was just about finding the best fit for me and where I felt the most comfortable, and also the best academic choice for me.”

The senior wide receiver was a four-year varsity letterman who starred on both sides of the ball for the Falcons, racking up 1,474 career receiving yards and 516 rushing yards during his final season at Los Fresnos.

Valencia said his coaches told him his versatility, which saw him play several skill position roles for the Falcons — including running back and a brief stint at quarterback — would make him more marketable to college coaches and recruiters.

“It was an adjustment, I wouldn’t say it was so much a challenge,” Valencia said about being asked to play multiple positions. “Really, I did anything to get the ball in my hands or help my team out at the end of the day, whatever the team needed. Whether it be defense — I’m (also) big special teams guy.”

As for Valencia’s transition to life on the East Coast, the Los Fresnos football and track standout said his first official visit to Columbia also was his first trip to New York. It came after a prompt from coach Patrick Brown to widen his search beyond Yale, which appealed to him because of the opportunity to be close to his brother.

“I made him go up to New York City,” Brown said. “And he came back with a different twinkle in his eye. Their coaching staff came down here two different times. … We don’t get a lot of traffic down here period. So for a school in New York City to come down here and recruit him, it’s pretty unbelievable.”

Ultimately, Valencia and his family were grateful he took the leap of faith to forge his own Ivy League trail.

“I was kind of scared, I thought it would be a big adjustment,” Valencia said. “But being there, I felt very comfortable with the coaching staff. You’re in New York, so everything’s there. It’s a great fit, and I’m looking forward to everything.”

Being welcomed into a prestigious academic circle was cause enough for celebration — so much so that the signing ceremony was held in the gymnasium instead of the usual lecture hall. To further accommodate a large crowd of friends and family and fellow Los Fresnos student-athletes at the last minute, the pullout bleachers were fully extended, as they are on game days.

“He may be one of the single greatest young men (I’ve encountered),” Brown said. “(In terms of) quality, and (being a) ‘yes sir, no sir, yes ma’am, no ma’am’ type kid. You would dream that all young men would emulate him.”

Vasquez leads Lady Cardinals’ comeback win over Lady Eagles

By STEFAN MODRICH, Staff Writer

HARLINGEN – Harlingen High generated several chances during the first half of Tuesday’s District 32-6A game against Brownsville Hanna, and had nothing to show for it heading into the break.

Despite trailing by one goal for nearly 60 of 80 minutes played, the Lady Cardinals rallied behind a goal and assist from Kay-Lani Vasquez for a 3-1 victory to pull even with Rivera at 2-0 atop the district standings.

“We knew we had to come out strong and be the first to every ball,” Harlingen High coach Debra Hernandez said of her team’s improved play during the second half. “Every girl played the way we asked them to play, and they played well.”

With 21:04 to play in the second half, Vasquez broke away from the pack to find herself all alone with Hanna goalkeeper Karime Martinez and gently tucked the ball into the back of the net for an equalizer.

At the 17:38 mark, Vasquez dropped a dime right to the boot of Maya Quinonez in stride, and she finished the play with a flourish to give the Lady Cardinals a 2-1 lead.

“I saw that (Quinonez) was open,” Vasquez said. “I (knew) she had the speed and she’s very consistent with the ball, so I knew if I passed her the ball I could trust her to score.”

Vasquez nearly had her second assist when she set up Alexa Gonzalez for an uncontested shot in front of the net that ricocheted off the lower side of the crossbar with less than 10 minutes to go.

Gonzalez got her chance moments later, when a long shot saved by Martinez was dropped in front of the goal and Gonzalez poked the ball through the five-hole to give the Lady Cardinals a commanding two-goal advantage.

“I loved the goal that (Gonzalez scored),” Vasquez said. “She tries very hard, and I’m glad she got one in. I was very excited for her.”

At the 19-minute mark of the first half, Hanna’s Ana Barragan was awarded a penalty shot, which she buried after Harlingen High keeper Erianah Zapata deflected the ball into the net.

Zapata, though, was steady throughout the game and stepped up to make two crucial saves in the first 10 minutes of play, one of which was against Barragan.

Hernandez said she was proud of her goalie’s quick acclimation to a position that was unnatural to her, and noted that several other Lady Cardinals have made similar adjustments due to injuries to key players during the early part of the district slate.

“(Zapata) has really taken to that position,” Hernandez said. “The defense is starting to trust her more. … We think she’s only going to get better with every game.”

She also was clutch in the game’s late stages, making a two-handed save at the 9-minute mark of the second half on a close-range blast and keeping the ball in safely in play without allowing another chance on a rebound.

Hernandez commended Quinonez for her role in aiding Zapata’s second-half clean sheet.

The freshman defender has been one of Hernandez’s most reliable contributors.

“We did whatever we could to score, and if it meant sending some defenders up to help and try to score, that’s what we had to do,” Quinonez said. “During halftime we got a pep talk and we came out with a hunger to score goals.”

The Lady Cardinals had several near misses during the first half, including a shot by Quinonez with 25:30 to play that rang off the crossbar and came back into play in front of the net, but the Lady Eagles prevented a second chance shot off of the rebound.

With 13:54 to go, Vasquez had an open shot that she hooked left of the goal from 25 yards out.

Likewise, Hanna had its share of missed opportunities toward the end of the first half.

At the 3:30 mark, Barragan had a point-blank chance to put her team up two goals but missed wide left, and was denied by the crossbar on another shot that led to a rebound and a second chance on a corner kick with less than one minute to go in the half, but the Lady Eagles failed to cash in.

Next up for the Lady Cardinals is a visit to Los Fresnos. The Lady Eagles play host to San Benito. Both games are slated to start at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Realignment shakes up key East Valley districts

By STEFAN MODRICH, Staff Writer

HARLINGEN — Consolidation was the name of the game Monday at the Harlingen Aquatic Center as coaches from across the Rio Grande Valley reacted to the University Interscholastic League’s new biennial realignment and reclassification for football, basketball and volleyball that will affect the 2020 season and last through the 2022 season.

New to District 32-6A are Weslaco High and Donna North, an expansion that draws in a pair of programs who previously competed in District 31-6A and are geographically adjacent to the East Valley. The moves make 32-6A an eight-team district.

“It should be a great challenge,” Harlingen High coach Manny Gomez said. “Anytime you start talking Valley football, it’s always a challenge. There are some teams down here that are very competitive. … Being around these coaches today and talking football and our schedules is definitely exciting.”

The Cardinals’ non-district slate kicks off with Laredo United South in Week 1, followed by a rematch of their 2019 bi-district playoff bout with Edinburg Vela in Week 2 and wrapped up with Laredo United South in Week 3.

“(The expansion) just makes 32-6A a little bit tougher,” Brownsville Hanna coach Mark Guess said. “That’s what we like, because we feel like we’re battle-tested and ready to make runs in the playoffs coming out of 32-6A.”

The Eagles will scrimmage against Sharyland Pioneer and Edinburg High, and open the 2020 regular season against Mercedes. Hanna is set to face Sharyland High in Week 2, one week after Brownsville Pace opens its season against the Rattlers.

“We’ll see if (Sharyland High) does a good job preparing us,” Pace coach Danny Pardo said. “And hopefully we’ll do a good job of preparing them. It’s definitely going to make us tougher for the district games.”

Other non-district games of note are Mission Veterans Memorial at San Benito in Week 2, and Rio Hondo against Brownsville Rivera in Week 3.

The Raiders also face PSJA North in Week 1, and Edinburg High in Week 2.

Harlingen South is slated to play Brownsville Veterans Memorial in Week 1 and Sharyland Pioneer in Week 2 before concluding its non-district slate against Alice.

District 16-5A Division I added McAllen High, McAllen Memorial, McAllen Rowe, and Weslaco East, all of whom moved down from Class 6A. Pace, Brownsville Veterans, Brownsville Lopez and Brownsville Porter remain in 16-5A DI.

Rio Grande City shifted to District 14-5A Division I, and PSJA Southwest and PSJA Memorial were bumped down to District 16-5A Division II.

“It’s going to make for an interesting district,” Brownsville Veterans coach David Cantu said.

The Chargers will scrimmage against Sharyland High and Weslaco High and take on Harlingen South before beginning their gauntlet of nine district games.

“It’s going to be a heck of a game,” Cantu said. “Coach Ricci’s done a fantastic job, they’re a playoff team just about every year. We’ve got our hands full, but so does everybody else in our district.”

An item of significance to fans in Brownsville looking ahead to the 2020 season is a directive from Brownsville Independent School District superintendent Rene Gutierrez to minimize Saturday games by utilizing Charger Stadium as an additional neutral site venue, along with Sams Stadium and Brownsville Sports Park.

“We’ve had three varsity contests there in my eight years here,” Cantu said. “But now, there might be a game there every week. … We haven’t settled our schedule yet, but it looks like we will have quite a few games at our actual campus.”

The other major shakeup occurred in District 16-4A Division II, which also expanded to eight teams. The district remains home to Rio Hondo, Raymondville and Port Isabel, and lost Progreso, which dropped to 16-3A Division I.

For the three teams from the East Valley in 16-A DII, that means plenty of additional travel for at least the next two seasons, as Corpus Christi West Oso, Ingleside, Robstown, Rockport-Fulton, and Sinton are new to the fold.

Rio Hondo begins its season against La Joya Juarez-Lincoln and is scheduled to play PSJA Memorial in Week 2.

Bobcats coach Rocky James was excited about the prospects of a more competitive district, as well as his team’s Week 3 non-district tilt against his friend, Beto Leal, and Rivera.

“I called Beto to see if he was looking (for a game) and he said he was,” James said. “So we were able to hammer one out. They’re a big school, but it will be fun playing them.”

Leal was equally enthusiastic about squaring off against one of 16-4A DII’s perennial playoff contenders.

“(James) has a good program,” Leal said. “They can easily compete (against Class 5A and Class 6A schools).”

Lady Falcons repeat as regional champions

By STEFAN MODRICH | Staff Writer

Last season, Los Fresnos sent out Sarah Villarreal on a high note, winning the 2019 Region VIII-6A championship and giving the senior another chance at a trip to state.

And Saturday at Margaret M. Clark Aquatic Center in Brownsville, the Lady Falcons didn’t miss a beat, with Jada Ashford stepping up to become the new face of a program that continues to add chapters to its storied history.

The 14-year-old freshman guided Los Fresnos (406 points) to the Region VIII-6A championship and set a pair of pool records with first-place finishes in the 50 freestyle (23.26) and 100 freestyle (51.57) in the process. She was named the girls swimmer of the year at the end of the meet.

If Ashford seems like a familiar face to those who also have competed on the biggest stage in the Rio Grande Valley, it’s because she is. She’s been swimming competitively since second grade, and her brother, Jonathan, also swam at the aquatic center for Brownsville Veterans Memorial.

“It feels very good to finally see all my years of work paying off now,” Ashford said. “I want to continue the legacy of my brother, and the standards were set so I have to meet them.”

Ashford (25.04) swam the butterfly segment of the Lady Falcons’ gold-medal winning 200 medley relay team. She also matched her record time in the 50 freestyle as the anchor in the 200 freestyle relay, which Los Fresnos won handily.

The 200 freestyle relay was led off by another freshman, Ariana Mancillas, and also featured Emily Rodriguez and Rebeca Osuna.

“My relay team girls, they’re the best,” Ashford said. “Just knowing how much work we’ve put in, we all hype up each other and we know we can do well. We have that in us.”

Hanna’s Matthew Lovett (55.08) broke the school record he previously set earlier this season in the 100 backstroke, good for a second-place finish. Eagles coach Sam Perez said the Hanna’s 400 freestyle relay — with Lovett, Quinton Deysel, Ricardo Rodriguez and Michael Kowalski — broke a city record with a time of 3:22.7 despite finishing third behind McAllen Memorial and Laredo United.

“This is the culmination of my entire swimming career since I was 5 years old,” Lovett said. “I’m really happy to say I’m going to state.”

Lovett, a senior, and Deysel, a junior are Austin-bound, having earned individual berths.

Deysel (22.05) won the 50 freestyle and was the runner-up in the 100 freestyle with a time of 48.03 seconds.

Joining them at state from the Eagles’ silver medalist 200 freestyle relay team (1:30.58) are Ricardo Rodriguez and Kowalski.

Another standout individual performer Saturday was Harlingen South’s Camille Conlu Lizada.

She shaved 2.75 seconds off of her entry time en route to a second-place finish in the 100 butterfly (1:03.31) and earned a return trip to Austin after failing to qualify during her sophomore season.

“Everybody in that field was really close together, and I knew it would be a dogfight until the end,” Lizada said. “The outcome wasn’t what I wanted, but I’m still going (to state).”

The junior said seeing standout performances from Ashford and other underclassmen at the regional final is a welcome development, one she can relate to first hand.

“I’ve raced these girls since we were young,” Lizada said. “I’ve seen them grow up, and we’ve all grown up together in this sport. It’s just really nice to see the generations behind me are keeping it up, and I see the potential of some of these girls that are winning and it’s there. I couldn’t be any more proud from what I’ve come from, and what they’re going to make (happen).”

Laredo United won the regional championship in the boys division. The top two relay teams and individuals in each race qualified for the two-day state meet, which is scheduled for Feb. 14-15 at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin.

Los Fresnos junior Anapaula Hernandez made history when she became the first diver in school history to qualify for the state meet.

She did so in her first season of competitive diving. Hernandez started out in swimming as a sprinter, competing mostly in the 50 freestyle, and at one point played tennis.

“I didn’t expect to get this far,” Hernandez said. “I feel like (my coaches and teammates) believed in me more than I believed in myself, and they saw it coming. … I feel really accomplished, and I’m really thankful for my coaches and my teammates.”

Hernandez hopes to capitalize on her newfound success from the diving platform and rejuvenate the interest in the competition among a talented pool of Los Fresnos athletes.

“I feel like we can start a new tradition here,” Hernandez said. “It’s really important for Los Fresnos because diving was never really a big thing, but now as a state qualifier I can bring more attention to the sport, and maybe more people will want to try it.”

Eagles, Lady Falcons soar at regional prelims

By STEFAN MODRICH, Staff Writer

The first day of the Region VIII-6A swim meet is a proving ground for some, and an opportunity to fine-tune for others.

But no matter what, coaches across the Rio Grande Valley expect their swimmers to give themselves a chance to do their best today, the final day of the regional championship.

Brownsville Hanna’s Nadia Gutierrez was among the top performers on the first day of the event held Friday at the Margaret M. Clark Aquatic Center in Brownsville.

Gutierrez (5:51.67) dropped a second and a half and earned the third seed in the 500 freestyle. Harlingen High’s Mckenna Stock (6:14.25) made one of the biggest leaps of the day by clinching the fifth seed and dropping 6.77 seconds from her initial seed time.

On the boys side, the one-two punch of junior Quinten Deysel (22.33) and senior Matthew Lovett finished first and second in the 50 freestyle (22.94).

“I’ve been working with these guys for a long time,” Hanna coach Sam Perez said. “I’m just really excited that they’re bringing their A-game today. Nadia and Matthew, they’re both seniors, and they’re setting a real good example for the kids like Quinten, who recently broke a couple of records.”

Gutierrez, Deysel and Lovett are all well-positioned to compete for a state qualifying spot. But the three veterans have been instructed to remain even-keeled throughout one of the year’s longest and competitive events.

“We’re not underestimating any team or anyone in the water (today),” Perez said. “Our goal is to swim our best and get our times today. … I think the biggest takeaway is to learn to be competitive for two days in a row, which is really hard to do. Most meets are just a day long. We had a practice meet to prepare for regionals, and they are seasoned swimmers, all of them. The pressure was really on (Friday) and it will be (again today).”

“It really tests their fitness,” Perez said. “It’s also a test of endurance, and it helps them become a more mature athlete.”

Los Fresnos coach Jaime Perez showcased the talents of his two freshmen, Jada Ashford and Ariana Mancillas.

Mancillas was the starter and Ashford was the anchor of the 200 freestyle relay team (1:44.38) that held on to its top seed by dropping more than eight tenths of a second.

The Falcons’ coach said the two girls began swimming in a local club program as second-graders, and the pipeline of talent to the high school level is continuing to grow.

“We have a swim club, and the kids start when they’re young,” Jaime Perez said. “That’s where it starts. I’m hoping to continue to get young swimmers with experience for the years to come.”

Harlingen South junior Camille Conlu Lizada (1:04.25) retained the top speed in the 100 butterfly.

“I told (Lizada to not) let it get in her head, and to focus on (today),” Hawks coach Hector Castaneda said. “She went hard (Friday), and she’s got to go harder (today).”

Castaneda anticipated the majority of his swimmers will compete in today’s regional final or consolation final.

One of his top boys contenders is Pasquale Davila, who will swim in the 100 backstroke. He also finished third in the prelims in the 200 freestyle (1:54.39).

“It’s one of those things where you swim your best (on the first day) and go even harder (on the second day,” Castaneda said. “You can only worry about yourself.”

“My seniors and my upperclassmen know this because I preach it to them, you have to focus on yourself and focus on being the best version of yourself.”

In the 1-meter dive, Harlingen High’s Amber Warner retained her regional title with a score of 351.70 and clinched another trip to Austin. Los Fresnos’ Anapaula Hernandez (243.40) was third, and Harlingen South’s Mae Kennedy was fourth.

Harlingen South’s Jason Luckey (279.35) placed second, Hanna’s Angel Alvarez (256.80) was fourth, and Harlingen High’s Ethan Sanchez (254.70) finished fifth in the boys division.

The top three divers in each division qualify for the state meet.
