McAllen Rowe senior quarterback Mateo Llanes is The Monitor’s Player of the Week after leading the Warriors to a 50-point first half en route to a 57-17 victory over District 16-5A DI opponent Brownsville Lopez on Friday at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium in McAllen.

Llanes completed 15 of 20 passes for 273 yards and five touchdowns during the first half, seeing the field for only one play after the break with the Warriors up 40. His performance helped the Warriors win their second consecutive contest, improving to 2-0 in district play.

Llanes and the Warriors (2-1, 2-0) will look to continue rolling in District 16-5A DI play Friday, taking on the Brownsville Pace Vikings (2-1, 2-0) at Sams Memorial Stadium in Brownsville.

Upper-Valley Football Roundup: Cougars cruise past Jaguars

The Edinburg North Cougars cruised past Edinburg Economedes 53-0 to win their District 31-6A opener Friday night at Richard R. Flores Stadium in Edinburg.

“The guys did a tremendous job executing on both sides of the ball. I thought we came out a little flat the first drive, but once the first series was out of the way, these guys put the pedal to the metal in executing the game plan,” Edinburg North head coach Damian Gonzalez said. “Defensively, the guys did a tremendous job.”

Seven different Cougars scored touchdowns led by quarterback Evan Medrano. The Cougars also received a scoring boost from their defense as Eddie Molina and Federico Cappadona returned interceptions for touchdowns.

Edinburg North moves on to face Mission High (2-1, 1-0) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Bill Pate Stadium in Hidalgo.

NON-DISTRICT

WESLACO HIGH 49, LAREDO NIXON 2: At Weslaco, the Panthers pummeled the Mustangs in their final non-district tune-up game to improve to 2-0 on the year.

Weslaco’s defense played lights out as Nixon’s only points were scored on a safety. The Panthers also forced five turnovers, two of which were returned for touchdowns by defensive end Jeremiah Vega and a 95-yard pick-six by linebacker Cesar Gomez.

Offensively, running back Marcus Saenz and Weslaco’s two quarterback system of Ethan Gallegos and Justin Rodriguez had plenty of room to operate as the offensive line established itself early on.

“One thing we stressed in practice was playing fast and physical, and that’s what they did tonight,” Weslaco High head coach Roy Stroman said.

Weslaco High is headed into its bye week before kicking off District 32-6A action against Donna North on Sept. 23 at Bennie La Prade Stadium in Donna.

DISTRICT 16-5A DI

McALLEN HIGH 26, DONNA HIGH 14: At Donna, Bulldogs running back Weston Guzman reeled off an 80-yard touchdown run during the third quarter, helping spark a Bulldogs run of 19 consecutive points on their way to a comeback victory.

Next for the Bulldogs (2-1, 1-1) is a home contest against the Brownsville Veterans Chargers (2-1, 2-0) on Friday at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium.

McALLEN MEMORIAL 53, LA JOYA PALMVIEW 9: At McAllen, Mustangs running back Ethan Castillo took the first play from scrimmage 70 yards for a touchdown, setting the tone for the route, as the Mustangs improved to 2-0 in district play.

Up next, the Mustangs (2-1, 2-0) travel to Sams Memorial Stadium in Brownsville to take on the Brownsville Lopez Lobos (0-3, 0-2).

DISTRICT 16-5A DII

MERCEDES 56, PSJA MEMORIAL 7: At Mercedes, Tigers quarterback Mike Cisneros capped off another 50-point performance by the Tigers with a 58-yard touchdown run.

Cisneros finished the night with two touchdown passes and one rushing score, as the Tigers improved to 3-0 on the season.

Up next, the Tigers (3-0, 1-0) take on the Valley View Tigers (0-3, 0-1) on Friday at Tiger Stadium in Pharr.

Thursday’s Game

MISSION VETERANS 59, VALLEY VIEW 14: At Hidalgo, Dylan Velasquez hauled in five catches for 140 yards and three touchdowns, as the Patriots picked up their first win of the 2021 season.

Quarterback Ricky Reyna finished the night 13 of 23 for 250 yards and six touchdowns, while wideout Marckopolo Cavazos added four catches for 76 yards and two touchdowns.

The Mission Veterans (1-2, 1-0) will look to keep rolling as they take on Roma (2-1, 1-0) on Friday at Gladiator Stadium in Roma.

Donna North HC Cuevas named DCTF Class 6A Coach of the Week

Donna North second-year head coach Juan Cuevas was named Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Class 6A Coach of the Week after he led the Chiefs to a 38-14 victory over La Joya Juarez-Lincoln in Week 2. The win was Cuevas’ first as a head coach and also snapped the program’s 30-game losing streak, dating back to Oct. 13, 2017.

“It’s the culmination of the hard work and dedication that not only our coaching staff has, but the past coaching staff that established the foundation there. We’ve been through a lot of adversity with the pandemic and coming in with all the challenges we’ve been through as a program, as a staff and as a community, it feels amazing to be part of this,” Cuevas said after the win Friday night. “It’s my first win as a head coach, we broke a streak and I’m just so happy for our players, the Donna North community, the administration that believed in me and my staff, that we could come in and establish a good program, and this is just the start.”

The Chiefs (1-0, 0-0) face La Feria (1-0, 0-0) at 7:30 p.m. Friday in La Feria.

Class 6A Notebook: Edinburg High eyes first win of season

Edinburg High has lost its first two games of the season by one score each.

While a win has been just out of the Bobcats’ reach, Edinburg High (0-2, 0-0) is in prime position to open District 31-6A action on the right foot as La Joya Juarez-Lincoln (0-2, 0-0) visits Richard R. Flores Stadium in Edinburg at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Quarterback Roland Abrego starred in the Bobcats’ Week 2 loss on the road against Brownsville Rivera as he threw for 142 yards and one score while running for 161 yards and two more touchdowns. His performance catapulted the senior into second in District 31-6A’s latest rushing leader ranks.

Meanwhile, the Huskies enter their 31-6A opener coming off back-to-back losses to Rio Hondo and Donna North to start the season.

FINAL TUNE-UP FOR 32-6A

District 32-6A teams are one week away from beginning league play, but Donna North and Weslaco High hope to keep the momentum they’ve built during non-district action to carry over.

The Chiefs just ended a 30-game losing streak in Week 2 by defeating La Joya Juarez-Lincoln 38-14. Donna North’s offense posted 354 total yards led by a five touchdown day by quarterback Robert Gomez. He threw a pair of touchdowns to Deandray Quezada and ran in three more on the ground, while running back Louie Cavazos proved to be a force with 148 rushing yards.

Donna North is scheduled to wrap up non-district play against La Feria at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Lions Stadium in La Feria.

Over in Weslaco, the Panthers earned a 24-20 in their season opener against Mission High in Week 2 on a last-minute touchdown run by Marcus Saenz. The Panthers saw two scrimmages and a rivalry game against Weslaco East canceled due to COVID-19 concerns, but that didn’t stop them from starting the year with a win.

Weslaco closes non-district action against Laredo Nixon at 7 p.m. Friday at Bobby Lackey Stadium in Weslaco.

LA JOYA LOOKS FOR 2ND STRAIGHT WIN

La Joya High is back in the win column for the first time since 2019 after sitting out last season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Coyotes first had to juggle with a schedule change as La Feria was forced to bow out of their previously scheduled Week 2 game early in the week. La Joya picked up a non-district game against Kingsville King, which the Coyotes won 12-7.

The Coyotes’ defense stifled the Brahams, surrendering just 208 yards of total offense while forcing two fumbles. La Joya’s defensive unit ranks second in District 31-6A with an average of 202 yards allowed per game.

The Coyotes will be chasing a second straight win as they open District 31-6A competition against rival Mission High at 7:30 p.m. Friday at La Joya ISD Stadium.

Weslaco East (1-0, 1-0) moves up one spot to No. 5, opening its season with a crushing 24-0 victory over Donna High after having their Week 1 contest canceled. The Wildcats continue district play this week on the road against the Brownsville Veterans Chargers.

San Benito (2-0, 0-0) continued its ascent up the rankings, climbing to No. 6 after cracking the Top 10 last week. The Greyhounds will look to build off a 51-0 victory over Mission Veterans as they wrap up non-district play against Schertz-Clemens in Week 3.

Harlingen South (2-0, 0-0) makes its first appearance in the top 10, ranking No. 7 after outscoring opponents 98-9 through the first two weeks of play. The Hawks hit the road during Week 3, taking on the Alice Coyotes on Friday.

The McAllen Memorial Mustangs (1-1, 1-0) bounced back from a Week 1 loss to the SaberCats with an overtime victory over McAllen High to open District 16-5A DI play. Still, the Mustangs fall one spot in the rankings, taking the No. 8 spot. The Mustangs will look to climb in the rankings as they play host to the La Joya Palmview Lobos on Friday.

Reports: Santa Rosa declines to renew Cipriano’s contract

STAFF REPORTS

SANTA ROSA – According to multiple reports, the contract of Santa Rosa athletic director and boys basketball coach Johnny Cipriano was not renewed at Wednesday night’s Santa Rosa ISD Board of Trustees meeting.

The school board meeting was held via teleconference.

According to reports, the trustees’ vote was 4-3 for non-renewal of Cipriano’s contract.

A reason for non-renewal of the coach’s contract was not immediately given.

Cipriano coached the Warriors in basketball for 22 years and captured 16 district championships and co-championships. He took the Warriors to the UIL state tournament three times, which is more than any other Rio Grande Valley basketball coach has done.

This season, the Warriors shared the District 32-3A title with Brownsville Jubilee.
