The McAllen High Bulldogs, Weslaco High Panthers and Port Isabel Tarpons are the latest teams to enter the RGVSports.com top 10 poll after a thrilling Week 5 of high school football action across the Rio Grande Valley.

No. 8 McAllen High (4-1, 3-1) is back in the top 10 for the first time since its Week 2 loss to McAllen Memorial. The Bulldogs have ripped off three consecutive wins, including a 42-28 victory against Brownsville Porter during Week 5.

Weslaco High (3-0, 1-0) has fallen in the receiving votes category for three weeks in a row, but the Panthers have finally broken into the top 10 at No. 9 after defeating Donna North 42-3 last week.

Port Isabel (4-0, 1-0) enters the top 10 for the first time this season at No. 10 after topping Robstown 55-40 last week in their District 16-4A DII opener. The Tarpons are scheduled to host Raymondville at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The top seven spots remained the same as last week’s poll with No. 1 Edinburg Vela (5-0, 3-0) holding on to the top spot with all six first-place votes.

Mercedes (5-0, 2-0) has not budged from No. 2 all season, either, as the Tigers earned a 69-21 win over Roma last week. Next for the Tigers is a rivalry game against Edcouch-Elsa set for 7:30 p.m. Friday at Tiger Stadium in Mercedes.

District 32-6A owns the next three spots in the poll led by No. 3 Harlingen High, No. 4 San Benito and No. 5 Harlingen South. The Cardinals (3-1, 1-0) topped Brownsville Rivera 41-10 last week, while the Greyhounds (4-0, 1-0) beat Los Fresnos 38-7. Meanwhile, Harlingen South flew by Brownsville Hanna 41-12. No. 3 Harlingen and No. 5 Harlingen South are set for a Week 6 showdown at 7 p.m. Friday at Boggus Stadium in Harlingen.

No. 6 McAllen Memorial (4-1, 4-0) emerged victorious from its top 10 rivalry game against last week’s No. 8 McAllen Rowe 16-6. The Mustangs are on a bye this week, returning to action Oct. 8 against Brownsville Pace in Brownsville.

The PSJA North Raiders (3-1, 1-0) remain at No. 7 after a 63-0 walloping La Joya High during Week 5. The Raiders are set for a key District 31-6A game against Edinburg North set for 7:30 p.m. Friday at PSJA Stadium in Pharr

The Mercedes Tigers’ offense continued its early season offensive explosion, scoring more than 50 points for a third straight week, routing the Roma Gladiators 66-21 in a District 16-4A Division II contest Friday at Tiger Stadium in Mercedes.

“We have some explosive players on the offense,” Mercedes head coach Roger Adame said. “Our offense feels like they can score whenever they have the ball in their hand. We’re excited to see that. Our offensive coordinator, Paul Reyes does a great job.”

Tyrell Treviño led the charge offensively, reeling off touchdown runs of 60 and 70 yards.

Up next, the Tigers (5-0, 3-0) host the Edcouch-Elsa Yellow Jackets (1-4, 1-2) at 7 p.m. Friday at Tiger Stadium in Mercedes.

“I told the boys we’d enjoy this one tonight then we’re going to hit the film room,” Adame said. “One of the things we’re looking at is they run an offense similar to Roma, so we got to see that tonight. That’ll help us out in preparing for that offense. They’re a well-coached, physical team. That game is always physical.”

SHARYLAND HIGH 54, PSJA SOUTHWEST 21: At Pharr, Alan Guerrero rushed for a pair of touchdowns as the Rattlers improved to 2-0 in district play.

Up next, the Rattlers (3-1, 2-0) host the Mission Veterans Patriots (3-2, 3-0) in a pivotal District 16-5A DII matchup Thursday at Richard Thompson Stadium in Mission.

DISTRICT 16-5A DI

WESLACO EAST 27, BROWNSVILLE PACE 0: At Weslaco, the Wildcats’ defense pitched its second shutout of the year to improve to 3-1 in district play.

All-purpose back Asthon Guajardo ran for three touchdowns on 115 yards, while running back Jay Vasquez added 98 rushing yards and another touchdown on the ground.

Weslaco East moves onto its bye week before resuming District 16-5A DI competition against McAllen High (4-1, 3-1) on Oct. 7 at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium.

“Our defense has played really well. We started out a little slow but we’re starting to put Weslaco East football back together, a lot of smash mouth running the ball and defense coming up big with two shutouts,” Weslaco East head coach Mike Burget said.

DONNA HIGH 42, BROWNSVILLE LOPEZ 7: At Donna, Jake Garcia threw for a touchdown and rushed for another to lead the Redskins to their first win of the season.

The Redskins (1-3, 1-3) get a week off before returning to action Friday, Oct. 8, against McAllen Rowe (3-2, 3-1) at Bennie LaPrade Stadium in Donna.

Mission High dropped out of the RGVSports.com Top 10 poll following a Week 2 loss to Weslaco High. This week, the Eagles are back in the top 10 following back-to-back wins to open District 31-6A play, coming in at No. 10.

The Eagles (3-1, 2-0) are coming off a huge 28-24 victory over District 31-6A rival Edinburg North on Friday, with quarterback Kevin Guerra finding the end zone with 44 seconds left to give his team the win. They’ll look to continue rolling Thursday, taking on Edinburg High (2-2, 2-0) at Richard R. Flores Stadium in Edinburg.

Holding the No. 1 and 2 spots for a fifth consecutive week are the Edinburg Vela SaberCats and the Mercedes Tigers, respectively, both improving to 4-0 on the season.

The SaberCats (4-0, 2-0) prepare for a contest against crosstown rival Edinburg North (2-2, 1-1) on Friday, following a 69-7 thrashing of La Joya High. Meanwhile, the Tigers (4-0, 2-0) play host to the Roma Gladiators (2-2, 1-1) on Friday after taking down Valley View 69-0 during Week 4.

Harlingen High, San Benito and Harlingen South come in at third, fourth and fifth, respectively, staying put from last week’s poll, each coming off a bye.

All three teams return to play Friday, kicking off District 32-6A play with the Cardinals (2-1, 0-0) hitting the road to take on Brownsville Rivera (2-1, 0-0), while the Greyhounds (3-0, 0-0) host Los Fresnos (1-1, 0-0). Meanwhile, the Hawks (3-0, 0-0) return home after a two-game road trip, taking on Brownsville Hanna (1-2, 0-0).

The PSJA North Raiders (2-1, 0-0) are the fourth District 32-6A team in the top 10 poll, holding on to the No. 7 spot. They’ll look to rebound from a Week 3 loss to Edinburg Vela, facing off against La Joya High on Friday at La Joya ISD Stadium.

McAllen Memorial and McAllen Rowe each reeled off their third straight win, both improving to 3-0 in District 16-5A DI. The Mustangs retain the No. 6 spot, while the Warriors move up one, coming in at No. 8.

The Mustangs (3-1, 3-0) and Warriors (3-1, 3-0) clash at 7 p.m. Friday at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium in The Monitor’s Game of the Week.

The La Feria Lions (3-0, 0-0) continued their impressive start to the season, taking down Corpus Christi Tuloso-Midway 58-36 on Friday. The Lions are the lone sub-5A team to crack the poll, moving up to No. 9 following their triumph.

Others receiving votes were Edinburg North, McAllen High, Raymondville and Weslaco High. Voting is done by sports writers/editors from The Monitor, The Valley Morning Star and The Brownsville Herald.

Mission High’s Kevin Guerra is The Monitor’s Player of the Week for Week 4 after leading the Eagles to a 28-24 victory against Edinburg North on Friday in Hidalgo.

The senior quarterback threw for 349 yards, ran for 38 yards and scored four total touchdowns during the win to send the 3-1 Eagles to 2-0 in District 31-6A play. He scored the game-winning rushing touchdown on a two-yard burst with 44 seconds left during the fourth quarter.

Next for the Eagles is a District 31-6A matchup against Edinburg High (2-2, 2-0) at 7 p.m. Thursday at Richard R. Flores Stadium in Edinburg.

The Sharyland Pioneer Diamondbacks opened District 16-5A DII play with a win, taking down the PSJA Memorial Wolverines 27-15 on Friday at PSJA Stadium in Pharr.

The Diamondbacks jumped out to an early advantage, holding a 20-3 lead at the end of the first half. The Wolverines continued to battle back, outscoring the Diamondbacks 12-7 during the second half.

Despite a second-half charge, the Diamondbacks held strong, hanging on for the victory.

“We sputtered a little bit,” Diamondbacks head coach Eddie Galindo said. “We got some young guys. We’re a young team. But they were resilient tonight. They kept fighting and grinding. We found a way to put it together and get enough to win.”

Up next, the Diamondbacks (2-1, 1-0) host the Valley View Tigers (0-4, 0-2) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Richard Thompson Stadium in Mission.

MISSION VETERANS 48, ROMA 3: At Roma, defensive back Felipe Olvera returned an interception for a touchdown for the Patriots’ first score of the night, rolling past the Gladiators for their second straight victory.

The Patriots stifled the Gladiators’ No. 2 district-ranked offense, forcing six turnovers while holding them to a season-low three points.

Up next, the Patriots (2-2, 2-0) host the Edcouch-Elsa Yellow Jackets (1-3, 1-1) at 7 p.m. Thursday at Richard Thompson Stadium.

MERCEDES 69, VALLEY VIEW 0: At Mercedes, the Tigers’ offense continued rolling, scoring 10 offensive touchdowns en route to their fourth straight victory.

The Tigers’ defense pitched its first shutout of the year, improving to 3-0 in district play.

Next for the Tigers is a home contest against the Roma Gladiators at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Tiger Stadium.

DISTRICT 16-5A DI

McALLEN MEMORIAL 41, BROWNSVILLE LOPEZ 14: At Brownsville, Mustangs backup quarterback JP Cortez stepped into the starting role, leading the Mustangs to a 3-0 start in district play.

Cortez connected with his brother, Sebastian Cortez, for a 40-yard touchdown with 44 seconds left in the opening period, giving the Mustangs a 34-7 advantage at the break.

The Mustangs (3-1, 3-0) turn their attention to a marquee matchup against the McAllen Rowe Warriors (3-1, 3-0) at 7 p.m. Friday at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium.

DISTRICT 31-6A

EDINBURG HIGH 49, EDINBURG ECONOMEDES 9: At Edinburg, the Bobcats cruised past the Jaguars to improve to 2-0 in District 31-6A action and 2-2 overall.

Next for Edinburg High is a matchup between 2-0 teams in 31-6A as the Bobcats host Mission High at 7 p.m. Thursday at Richard R. Flores Stadium in Edinburg.

Edinburg Economedes is also set for 7 p.m. start Thursday against PSJA High at PSJA Stadium in Pharr.

MISSION — The McAllen Memorial Mustangs took down the Sharyland High Rattlers 25-14, 25-19, 23-25, 18-24, 15-10 in a key District 31-5A showdown Tuesday night at Sharyland High School.

The Mustangs (22-10, 3-0) raced out to a 2-0 advantage in the match, but saw their lead quickly vanish as the Rattlers (24-8, 1-1) rallied to win sets three and four.

Memorial made the most of the decisive fifth set, however, as a block by Amare Hernandez put the finishing touches on the match in favor of the Mustangs.

“It was our second district game and I’m excited because I can use this to correct for later on. I’m really proud of the girls and all the effort they’ve shown,” Memorial head coach Ashley Doffing said. “It shows all the hard work that has been leading up to district, and I’m excited to be in one of the toughest districts.”

The No. 16-ranked Rattlers, according to the most recent Texas Girls Coaches Association poll, were led by freshman Kenisha Martinez.

The Mustangs will be back in action when they face PSJA Southwest at noon Saturday at PSJA Southwest High School.

Meanwhile, the Rattlers must prepare for another marquee matchup as Sharyland High takes on McAllen Rowe at noon Saturday at Sharyland High School.
